Full brake service at the dealer

My brakes are still ok, they just pulse a bit. Today I called the dealer to ask about the price. Just for the heck of it. They said that it's $450 per axle for complete brake service including pads, rotors, lubing, cleaning calipers. They give you lifetime warranty on pads and 12 month/ 12k miles on rotors. What does everybody think? We are talking $976.50 that is including tax.

It depends. If you have money and no time, price is about right for a dealer service.
Parts cost:
Front Pads: $45
Front rotors: $140
Front Calipers (Remanufactured): $90, cleaning only would be $5 for grease
Rear Pads: $45
Rear Rotors: $65
Rear Calipers (Remanufactured): $90 cleaning only would be $5 for grease
New brake fluid $30

So all new parts would be: $500 or $320 if you just clean the calipers.
Dealer would charge 100% parts mark-up, so it would be $650 for same parts, as they only said they will clean calipers and not replace them + labor to do it, so your quoted price is on target.
You can also get cheaper aftermarket pads/rotors set on eBay for about $200 but quality can be hit or miss.
It would take you about 2-3 hours to do the job at home.

Let me compare that cost for you....

I could fly to NY from ATL, buy pads and rotors for your car, install and fly home and still pocket $200 for that price....

Dealer = Warranty Work
Everyone Else = Non Warranty Work

That seems really expensive to me. I don't think the lifetime warranty on pads means anything unless they include wear and labor to replace. Usually it's just on defects.

If your brakes are pulsing, first try rebedding the pads, then just have the rotors reground unless they are at the service limit.

I did the fronts in Jan using Centec ceramics from Rock Auto and had the rotors turned and Brake Masters for something like $80 including labor and shipping. 1st time ever doing brakes, and I have to say I have been wasting money for a looooong time paying a shop.

DISCLAIMER: We have really nice weather here, so nothing that would fuse bolts and nuts together like salt and ice. I got the rotors off with a soft tap from a $5 rubber mallet.

Lol, you really made me laugh. I am glad i have a friend who is a manager of auto service shop, so I buy what I want and his guys put it in. I used to do it myself but I am tired now. I think I will go with Wagner pads as I have on my wife's Civic and they are super quiet and no dust. Also I like Autozone Wearever rotors. It's amazing how the dealer rips you off. Unfortunately, I had to pay for the tranny flush the other day ($189 + tax) so the can't say I broke the tranny due to lack of maintenance. When I called they tried to force me to make appt for brakes and said that 37,000 is amazing for brakes. Bull, some people have 65k miles on the originals. I still have 50% left at least.

I totally agree with you. Centric premium rotors and Centric ceramic pads are really nice products. Rockauto makes finding what fits your car very easy too...with great prices. A month ago I did front and rear rotors with pads on our 2008 Mazda5 that has 62000miles. These rotors and pads are definitely a step up from the OEM parts that came with the car.

Dealers also have two types of pads they use, i'm sure that price is with OEM pads. They sell Mazda 'value pads' for significantly less than the OEM. You will still pay far more for a brake job at a dealer than at an aftermarket brake job shop.

Uh hmm... no. At that price I'd just upgrade to the Mazdaspeed3 hardware (my plan) and still have half of your cash left over. For $1000 I could probably build a nice monoblock caliper upgrade on some large pizza pan rotors...

Centric is good stuff- they're the parent company for Stoptech. I've got a mix of Stoptech and Centric branded parts on my S2000- very good quality stuff.

Wow! what a ripoff, reminds me of one of my buddy who paid infinity $1,500 for a brake job.

Call some local shops.. you're about to get ripped off. You can DIY for $100 using rock auto and finding a reasonable machine shop to do your rotors. A reasonable quote from a shop would be sub $400 from what I've seen other people pay.

Only use the dealer for oil change coupons and warranty work is a good rule to follow.
