Fuel Economy issues (2010 Mazda3)

Mazda 3 Hatchback
Hi

I'm new to the Mazda247 community. I was wondering if I could get some feedback from others about the fuel economy of my ride.

I recently picked up a 10' Mazda 3 Sport hatchback 2.5L & 6 spd. (not a Skyactiv powertrain)

Noticed that my fuel economy is horrible.

The last three tanks I got ...
10.7L/100km (22mpg)
9.9L/100km (23mpg)
8.4L/100km (28mpg)

My commute is mostly hwy, so I was expecting better fuel economy than this.

The last tank I was hypermiling and was expecting to get into the 7.0L/100km to 7.5L/100km (30+mpg) range, driving like that, but I didn't.

I don't think I'm driving with the rpm's too low. Shifting at 2,500-ish and cruising anywhere between 1,800 to 2,500.

I'm using 93 octane fuel.

Car runs great. Lots of power. No engine light is on. Smooth engine throughout the rpm range, except a very minor engine vibration at 2,300rpm.

Had the oil and filter changed as soon as I got it (5W-20 Quaker State)

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Those numbers don't look great, even for a 2.5L, but mine is a SkyActive-G 2.0, so I really don't have much of a basis for comparison.

I had a Ford Focus Zetec 2.0 before the Mz3, which is pretty close to the 2010 Mz3 engine, and the best of your numbers would be typical for my winter use in my mostly highway commute, so maybe there's nothing wrong... although other than keeping engine speed no higher than needed, I did nothing to save fuel (my traction control light would be flashing every time I accelerated from a stop or out of a corner in winter, and the gas pedal was to the floor routinely).
