Front Strut Boots Torn - what to do?

Gova - Good info on new boots, thanks.

Last questions remain:

1. Can they cut off old boots without disassembling strut?
2. Can they install new design boot without disaaembly/assembly of strut?

If yes to both questions, labor involved would be low.

Would you really want to install split boot? I would not.

It has to be taken apart to remove old and install new boot. The spring has to be removed as well. It is actually quite laborious procedure to replace $8 boot.

No way around it, unfortunately.

Agreed unless it was very well designed, obviously first ones were not. Thanks for reporting on labor content.

Did they check alignment after?

Having had the front struts apart to replace springs, I can tell you it may be possible to cut the old boots off (the top is just a slip-fit over the bearing collar), but there's no way you could install a new set without disassembly.

Yes, and not much to be gained by cutting them off. Certainly a labor intensive process to replace with new boots.

I assume service departments checking alignment after reassembly.

They should, however it's probably not the end of the world if they don't. There's little possibility of settings changing (toe) with the way things go back together.
