Hey guys lets see if you see something I overlooked. 03 mazda 6s auto, 174,000 miles. Car overheated, blew the head gasket. Heads were sent off for full service, including valve job and re surface. Re assembled the car, replaced the Seized stat, new waterpump, new ect sensor. It doesn't overheat, but when it warms up to temp, it occasionally will goto 3/4, then back down to normal. Only when I'm driving, usually above 50. If I get on it hard, it will do the same, then go right back down. We replaced the radiator a month before cuz of a leak, and I replaced the waterpump before we took the heads off thinking the pump may just be bad. I've flushed the heater core, we ran water through the block with the fresh heads to make sure all passages were good. I have no idea why this is happening. I can drive the car but it's irritating having to watch the gauge. The car has awesome power, has heat. I've gone through an extensive purge process to burp the system, including jacking the front end up as well. Both fans seem to be working properly. I do not leak coolant. These are my next guesses...
1.) flush the radiator, thinking maybe head gasket material may be causing an intermittent clog? If thats even possible.
2.) maybe waterpump defective or the belt is slipping, which I'm about the delete the tensioner. The pump is 1 month old. I don't know how to tell if the belt skips occasionally and if that will cause it to temporarily go up a little. S
3.) I did put a 180 stant stat in instead of the 195 stock stant I believe, dunno if that's an issue.
4.) even after the extensive burping processes of revving out my engine per Alldata and driving it 50 miles or so now, maybe there's somehow still air in the system?
I thought once the timing might be advanced causing it to get hot maybe after the head instal, if the VVT actuators were installed wrong, but the car runs too smooth and great, although I do think it's A lot faster now on the upper end... Then again fresh heads and valves on a 170k motor will make a difference
Any input or advice will be accepted. My next step is to take it to Mazda for them to diag it for me.
Thanks.
