98 protege lx touring 1.8t
I have lost compression in one of my cylinders and not sure what course i should take.

Some history about my car: its a 98 protege lx touring with a bpt installed. To run properly i am using a 97 integra gs-r distributor with a 95 civic sir ecu and hondata s300 piggy-back. It runs by map sensor. Hence Frankenstien. The car ran perfect. Too perfect.

Now I have no compression in the cylinder closest to the dist.

Options are scrap/sell the car as is, rebuild$$$ or use a n/a bp with the current set up and stick to low boost. The car will be sold after anyway.

Any suggestions? Any offers?

Thanks Derrick,

Funny you say use low boost, I was only running at 10 psi.
It was my daily driver so I drove pretty easy. Waiting for the verdict on the cause of its demise.

Can I save any parts from the bpt to improve the bp?

Only 10 psi? Wow that seems weird. I had been running a BPT at 15-18 psi for 4 years until I sold the car to a friend. He is still driving it.

The BPT was really a low compression BP engine. The cams used a different profile but that was about it for engine internal differences.

I know its weird. When you baby the car it seems thats when it all goes wrong. I'll give you my symptoms and maybe you can weigh in on my problem.

Car runs rough, seems as if only three cyls are firing. There is lots of fuel, so much that its comes out the exhaust. There is spark. We took the spark plug out and plugged the hole with a rag to see if there was compression, the rag popped out no problem. Still we think there is a crack in ring, pistion or a valve.

Is there anything you can suggest to try or really its to far gone to do anything anyway?

Hey 98probpt it like u have an injector that is constantly open u may hav a shortage in ur wire harness, i had this prob wid a jeep which had d same symtoms u hav dumpin raw gas out d exhaust, only power on three cylinders.....

Thats what we thought so we switched the injector to another cylinder but the problem never changed from the original location. May be electrical, will have to look into that.
I can deal with that over a rebuild or replacement.

cool. disconect the plug from the injector an trace those 2wires back 2the ECU an remove those 2wires from the ECU conector an run 2 temporary wires from d ECU bac 2 the injector..

When you say you have no compression in the cyl. is that because you did a compression test or did you do a cyl. balance test?

In all honesty whether its an injector or no compression the car is not going to be repaired. Judgment has been passed and the car will be buried.

If anyone is interested in parts I will sell them off. Just tell me what you need and make an offer. I will post pics of the car.

Basic upgrades that I think are still of value would be:
tranny w/shafts(it is a LSD, if someone can tell me how to confirm it I would appreciate it, however I do trust my mechanic)
turbo and manifold
intake manifold
intercooler
engine (if you want to rebuild)
1988 GTX seats (comfortable!)

I also have:
full wire harness the BPT w/ecu BP26
98 protege MAF sensor
greddy emanage (blue box)

I will post this stuff properly in the marketplace with pics.

Thanks for your input its been greatly appreciated.

When you say you have no compression in the cyl. is that because you did a compression test or did you do a cyl. balance test?

Doesn't sound like he did either. Sticking a rag in the spark plug hole and waiting for it to blow out is hardly a proper way to check for compression. But he's given up on the car, so I guess the point is moot.

it is true I have given up. The rag was just a driveway test and probably proves nothing, but the fact remains that she's not doing well and at this point I cannot spare the time or $$ to experiment. I've done enough of that already to the car.

Don't get me wrong I love that car and the fun I was, it just doesn't qualify for the economic bailout it needs. Maybe if I put a GM badge on it.
