Focus ZX5 2.3L vs Pro5 ?

I have been considering a pro5 (or sedan ES) lately, but a friend told me to at least drive the Focus ZX5 with the new 2.3 Liter engine (148 hp, I think). It is supposed to perform nicely, but I have been avoiding Ford due to reliability issues.....now I'm starting to worry that an automatic Protege5 might not be so reliable either (lots of AT problems posted here).

What do you think......is the ZX5 worth test driving??
Is a ZX5 with 2.3 Liter engine similar to what a Mazda3 will be?

(ps. I live in NY.....we have the new 2.3 pzev engine in Fords)

dude... stay away from Focus...

I used to own a Focus sedan... glad I don't anymore.

I had 3 recalls within a year (for minor things like "a wheel can detach from the vehicle"), had to take it in 3 more times in the same year to fix strange weird noises in steering and suspension (not where I want to have noises!) and had just a LOT of rattles.

Get anything. Get a Yugo. I kid you not. Don't get a Focus.

What you read here is nothing close to what problems Focus has. It is definitely "Out of focus".

Nice fist post rookie (thumb)

Welcome to the board !
(hi)

I'd aviod the Focus at all costs, just get the manual P5, then no worries.

I have the p5 with the sport shift auto.
over 10k miles on it and i don't baby it.
I have had no problems what so ever.
One suggestion... look into the leather option.
I have it on mine and I think it upgrades the quality of the interior a lot. I have gotten many compliments on the leather.

My girlfriend has a Focus, a 2001 LX with zero options. She's put 30k on it with only oil changes and the recommended services. No problems, no complaints, still runs nice and smooth.

I went with the Protege5 due to the "sex appeal" persay of the vehicle over that of the Focus. The only Focus I'd consider would be the SVT, currently. However in the process of obtaining my P5 I did test drive & price out a fully loaded ZX5 and it turned out to be about the same price as my loaded P5 after rebates/incentives from the factory.

One thing I've learned about tranmission complaints is that you can't trust them. While I'm not suggesting people are making up stories, I am merely implying that situations are unknown. I've seen a 26,000 mile P5 with Sport-AT that runs like a champ!

Problem, what problem, who said there was a problem, there's no problem, our vehicles are perfectly safe and reliable. :D

In their defense though my mom & dad have bought 4 new fords in the last 8 years and not had a problem out of any of them...
