How many of you out there have done the flip key conversion for your mazda3? I have been thinking about it, and just wanted some opinions.

Thanks, guys.

What do you mean by flip key?

I think he means like the VW/Audi keys, although a lot of companies are starting to do it.

aka the "switch-blade" keys.

I've read of acura boys doing it too.

I theoretically have one coming as a present, but alas I've seen naught of it.

Look in THIS thread for more info on keys, and flip keys.

Personally I want one so that I have one less thing on my keychain, and because I'd like to have a spare key, and get it before I lose one, 'cause if you don't have at least two keys for programming then the dealer has to do it for you and then you have to spend money for it. :(

on a similar topic, did any of your cars not come with the tiny silver tag on the key ring with the computer code? My sisters 06 3 came with it, but my 07 did not...

Yes, and it seems potentially important to save that. Or, you can do what I did, and before losing one key make a spare (3rd key). There are instructions elsewhere for doing this; cost me a total of $20 for the blank, $5 to cut it, 0 to program it (dealers charge $100-150 for this).

I got a flipkey for my 05 TGM3. Good investment as it eliminates the clutter from my key ring. Easy to program using the instructions I found here...

My spare set had a small silver ID tag. You should have had one on yours as well. The only way to get new keys cut, IF you loose both sets of keys!

Awesome, thanks for the input guys. Yeah, I have always loved the look of the flipkey, and I think it's such a space saver. I also think it adds just an extra bit more class to the car, instead of just having the key and a dinky little extra thing to open and close the doors. There isn't even a button to unlock the trunk! Oh well, maybe that's the price we pay for the convenience of owning a mazda3, having all the other amenities already standard on it. I guess the flipkey conversion is worth it then. H

How long did it take you to program it, TGM3?

oh and btw, did mazda upgrade the Speed3's key to a flipkey? I haven't driven one yet, so I don't know, but I hope to soon!

nope it really pisses me off, I want the flip key too and now that I have a speed 3 and my wife has a 3, I can't tell the damb keys apart.

check out my link above. Jason (www.onlinemazdaparts.com) has the regular transponder keys (non-flip) for ~$18 cut to your car, and shipped to your door.

You don't have to have the little silver tags. I still have one of mine, however I lost the second one. They can look up your code with just your VIN. Jason will do it with either the key code, or the VIN depending on what you have.

It should only take a few minutes as long as you get the sequence the first couple of times you try. If you have no timing then you might have more problems. ;)
