Flashing Cel

here we go again...

my P5 took a beating this winter, got stuck so many times in the small backstreet of where I'm parked in Montreal. Lots of reving and lots of shifting done, working the tranny very very hard.

I havent driven it so much since last november but its still been getting its 3 month oil change and 3 weeks ago I had a new rad installed.

the CEL is on and it always comes on when taking off too early after starting it (I think its due to the cold air intake and the MAP sensor) then staying on for a period of 2 to 3 days. I usually have the car run a couple minutes and then I'm good to go, runs great.

today was a different story. I was driving and there was absolutely NO power and I mean this was the worst I've seen, when I was stepping on the gas there was a 1 to 2 second delay after pressing the pedal for the car to respond. (this is hurting me just typing it out!) The idle was so poor it seemed like leaving in the first place was a bad idea, to the point where when I was stopped/@ a light it would want to stall unless I gave it a bit of gas.

Nice day out today too, I had errands to run and on my way the CEL started flashing. i noticed when the car wasn't moving that there was a burning smell. So I pulled over into a gas station parking lot (not too close to the gas pumps incase the car would blow up!) but just to glance under the hood. I noticed the temp gauge was where its supposed to be, the fan fuse was still good so I stopped the car for a sec, started it back up again and was on my way. When the driving the CEL would stay on but when stopped @ lights again it would start flashing!!!!!!

I got to where I wanted to go and there just so happened to be a CT right beside the place. I parked the car and made a couple calls (friends, mechanics, CAA) I popped the hood again and noticed the fan(s) weren't turning on when they really should have. I unplugged the 1 fan and turned on the A/C. (noobie or not you should know that when the A/C is on the fans automatically turn on) Nothing. I plugged the 1 fan back in and turned on the A/C again and the fans started working BUT soon shut off, so they were intermittent, shutting off and on. Fans or no fans the buring smell was still there.

I was about 10-15 mins from my house, went to grab some eats, called CAA and had it towed back home, drove it into the parking spot and this is where I am now.

Could the Coolant System Sensor have anything to do with this? Faulty, malfunctioning and not setting the fans off when they should causing the engine to heat up and thermostat not picking up on it?

any help appreciated. sorry for the book!!!!!!!!

Flashing CELS are very bad, you shouldnt be driving the car with those. Usually its a really bad misfire code. Im not sure what would cause it but id go over the car witha fine tooth comb before even turning it on (besides in the on position to check the code)

u got a new radiator, check the coolant?
and yes i agree u shouldnt drive it when the cel is flashing, go get the code checked somewhere, but u would have to drive it there so .......be careful? lol

Burning smell, no power, bad cat? But does bad cat make the cel flash? Don't remember. I know misfires will as was stated above. Def check plugs wires & coils in that order of cost. Go from there.

thanks for the quick replies...what should I check as far as coolant goes? clogging, leaking/low levels?

hopefully it is plugs and nothing more. coils and cables were replaced last summer.

I remembered having read something about not driving with Flashing CEL. This is why I didn't want to drive it home. The tow truck driver laughed when he asked "why not go to CT with it?" Even though I was in a CT (Canadian Tire) parking lot, there was no way I was taking my car there.

CAA gives me 3 free tows a month up to 50 bux/tow. If plugs or coils aren't the problem, I could get towed to the garage to get scanned and back home again to fix the problem myself if possible.

Will reply when I figure out whats up.

if anyone else has input on this situation, please add to it.

thanks again

Defiantly dont drive the car. A flashing cel could also mean a possibility of your car catching fire, ie. electrical problems.

Flashing CEL is never a good thing....muchless driving with one on like terbow said..........get the CEL code read.....usually is a terrible misfire caused by a messed up EGR valve. but get the codes read and find out. if it is a misfire....also check your EGR pipe for buildup of carbon.

oh great! (nervous)

good to know. thanks

this car is not leaving the lot

you think the EGR got cluttered up again?? it was just cleaned and the car hasn't even driven 20,000 kms since.....hmmm....maybe time for a 2nd EGR?

Well the EGR valve on FS 2.0L tend to suck....Mazda didnt do us any justice because the EGR valve they used in these motors the pin that holds the EGR Valve open or lets it close tends to break pretty easy. I know there were recalls but to very few mazdas.......But definitely get the CEL code read and see what it is. But keep in mind sometimes what happens is a symptom of what could be the potential issue. such as getting random misfires can be the symptom to having that EGR issue.

change your plugs start there. its not necessairly a egr issue you could have a bad coil pack. i could see the egr causing the idle issue but not the no power while driving.

if you have a friend that has a 2.0 protege ask him to swap coil packs for 5 mins to see if its your problem.

Ryan the Egr can and will give you that no power issue........happened to me when I used to drive down here to VA and see my wife...then fiancee......but none the less no power and bad idle and i would get on the throttle and barely go anywhere I would have to stomp the gas pedal to get to atleast 50mph.....lol go figure as soon as I got back to NY the issue was gone. Effin' VA...jk.

big thanks to delguini!!! (cool)

scanned the computer and pulled 6 codes! :S =( =)

now just have to figure out what each one is!

where can I do this???

Post them on the forum....best place to find the answer to it...and see whats going on with your car.

I did some quick research and what caused each code this is what I came across. Please correct if any of those are wrong and/or fill in the blanks. thanks

here are the codes in no particular order;

PO300 - coils, o2 sensor, plugs, cables

PO103 - MAF sensor

PO113

PO506

PO102 - MAF sensor

PO303 - cylinder 3 misfire

I came across something with the rad coolant temp being @ 186 or something about an "open loop" ...no idea but when I find the link again I'll post it. It doesn't sound good though. Coils (probably cheap crap) and cables were replaced last summer! I cant believe that they would have died out after less than 25,000 kms.

Np man, sorry about all the codes!!!! lol...

lets get your girl back up and running!

Do the plugs, wires & clean the MAF with MAF cleaner & be careful to not breaky zee delicate wire.lol. Then reset ecu by disconnecting the battery & pushing brake pedal few times or turn on headlight switch for a second to discharge completely. Connect battery. Drive it & see if any codes come back or cel is flashing or running bad. If so do the coils if that's the new code & running bad still. If running ok & still code then do the o2 sensor & so forth until no codes in order of cost.

Hey, -YellowMSP- linked up a sight b4 on the exact readout of all these codes. Here http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123641148&highlight=OBD+codes

Check that site and it will give you a definite break down of the codes.......like for P0300 i know code is random cylinder misfire......but check all the other codes.......you can also see if oyu can find a service manual online and trouble shoot these codes.....not gonna lie to you 6 codes is alot but they can be 6 symtoms to 1 bigger issue....once the bigger issue is solved the 6 symptoms can go away.
