ok guys, yesterday was my first time in the snow with my M2... with Failed Results... couldnt get any traction so i just decided to stay home lol... anyone got any tips out they're? i dont wanna invest in snow tires because it dosent always snow where i am (maybe every other year, for about a week) is they're any other suggestions for making it GO! lol thanks

Turn traction control off. If you're on ice, gooooooood luck! If you're on snow you can try different things depending on what kind of snow (light fluffy or thick/wet--good snowball snow).

If it's thick and wet there's a good chance it's slush on the road by now from traffic pounding it down. I say just take off real slow, as low revs as possible. Maybe even 2nd gear if you can. Since I put the AWR rear motor mount on it's much better, more clutch feel... I can do 2nd starts without slipping the clutch. Just let it out real slow.

The light snow you should just sink down in hopefully to pavement... I haven't had any real issue with a light dusting. It's a little slippery but not like the slushy mess of heavy wet snow.

But this is assuming that:

1. you are not on a hill (I had to go a different way to work the other day because someone stopped on a hill!)
and
2. they plow and salt your roads......

It's extremely rare I get to go out on untreated roads, and when I do there isn't a ton of snow. So maybe I'm underestimating how much snow you get in your area lol!

I'm getting my Blizzaks mounted today so I can assure you it'll be about 10x better with them, from having them on previous cars. I can understand you not wanting to get them though. They will wear fast on dry roads.

Wow...I am surprised...my 2 goes like a tank. Are you sure your traction control is turned on?

Did you mean to say off? I go nowhere with traction control on. On bigger cars with more power traction control seems to work better. But with only 100 hp, cut one wheel off and then it's useless ...braking whichever wheel is spinning over and over again.

if youre getting traction but your sliding around you should leave it on to keep your car straight from added stupidity (throttle), if its cutting throttle and not allowing you to do what you need to do to make it up hills etc, turn it off.

Thats my take.

No...I have had great success with it ON Jess....

By the way it's a misnomer to call them snow tires. They're called winter tires. If your winters see average temps below 7*C, even without snow or ice on the ground, all seasons just don't cut it as they start to harden up below 7*C which will reduce your traction. Whereas winter tires stay pliable down to -25*c or so before they start to harden up. If your on the road a lot, the investment IMO is worth it, for that edge that may help me avoid a collision and pay out nearly as much for a deductible for insurance, instead of a dedicated set of winter wheels/tires and avoid the whole situation. I swear by winter tires on all my cars.

That is an excellent way to put it.

I have an automatic with Winter Tires. I tell you I have a blast in the snow with The Hulk. Nothing like old fashion driving with Hand break and down shifting. I Love winter driving and watching the snow just being thrown up in the air as you cruise along.

If you put your front light on your grill to red itll look like the hulks tongue...then again...the hulks tongue might be green I dunno...;-)

I keep the traction control on, set off in 2nd slowly and works just fine for me, and yes handy b's and a good drift in big car parks FTW :)

I don't mind this car in the snow, its not the best but not horrible either. I was going to snag some snow tires this year but we haven't seen hardly any snow out here. Its really weird.

How do you turn the traction control off? Is the traction control what makes that crunching sound when you brake? Or is that the ABS? I feel like the crunching thing is way too responsive.

On the left side on the drivers side closes to the window on your dash you should have "a Button" with like 5 blank spaces. Looks like a car with zig zag tire tracks. Push that button and you should see on the gauge the light says off. I've not heard of this affecting your breaks. I too have noticed when it's in snow the abs kicks in... literally...I feel a pedal kick back and hear a slight crunch...I'm told that is normal.

mazda abs when engaged makes that crunchy noise that sounds like the car is falling apart. Abs is still engaged when the TCS\Stability control is turned off. If you're not racing or trying to stop quickly on ice or snow, my experience thus far is you have to actually try (and or be\act like a dumba$#) to get it to engage.

My ABS has came on regularly in the snow in MN. Very responsive.

What's the logic behind turning off traction control though?

try going up a hill slowly and it kicks on with mild spinning and kills your throttle...next thing you know all your momentum is gone and youre sliding down the hill because you didnt have the tc off where you could have spun a little and made it.

The ABS in my 2 and my wife's 3 doesn't sound abnormal to me at all...my old Chrysler sounded the same way. I'll admit that the ABS is a bit more liberal in being applied in the 2, but each time it's done it for me it's been for good reason.

I have to agree about the ABS. Living in Montreal everybody knows about QUEBEC drivers....pedestrians.. And dodging falling concrete. So it comes in handy.
