Feedback? - Kicker 8" L5 Solo-Baric in Factory Box

I haven't heard on in a p5 before, but just take notice that solo-barics are made for low bass. That's what they do best...they are not SQ subs. Also...when vented it'll hit even lower and you lose a little SQ.

Also if you want clean power, please don't use that Sony amp. I mean...if that's what you have, then by all means. Just...if you were planning on buying that, I'm sure you can find better stuff in that price range. The rest of the components are nice, though! :D

actually kickers are designed for the middle bass region, from about 45 hz to 70 hz. in a ported box they have a very sharp drop off below the tuned freq, much more than subs that are truely designed for low bass. kickers are more efficient in the middle region for SPL purposes. typically competitors don't play below 45 hz, or above 80 hz. if you want a good sub that will have great response over all the freq's, i highly recomend the elemental design A-series 8:

they recomend a .5 cu ft box tuned to 30 hz, and i rand the #'s, and that's pretty much perfect for the sub. if you click the box blueprints you can see the optimal enclosure for it;) course if you want something really sick, check this out:

Really, Wake? About the Kickers, I mean? I've always understood they just aren't great SQ, but can go low...oh well. Guess I haven't heard too many...

And that giant eD 8": They're supposedly going to do a short production run. Ben's thinking about taking pre-orders on it and once they hit a certain number making all of those for around 300$ a piece.

yeah, my friend sells/installs at a local shop that pushes a lot of kicker gear, and the low bass just isn't impressing:( they typically have a low excursion figure, which means they aren't very good for low bass. they definitely aren't top choices for SQ sub, but for SPL, they are very efficient;) course i'm big on a daily driver SPL vehicle, so i want to be able to play it loud at low to mid 20 hz range, and still burp over 147:D at the shop my friend works at, one of the other installers put 2 of the soloX's in his suburban, and i was not impressed at all:rolleyes: course he was only giving each sub 3000 watts, but it wasn't s*** compared to my friend that had 4 strocker 18's in his tahoe;) and when i mean it wasn't s***, i mean that the guy wouldn't even tell me what his SPL was, even though the shop has a meter, so i know he's metered it:rolleyes: if it broke 155 i'd be suprised. course my friend was hitting mid 160's back in '99-'00:D and that was off 2000 watts going to each sub;)

those 8's are crazy:D i wanted to pick one up, just to see what i could do with it;)

I appreciate the feedback guys. I haven't been up to speed in the car audio game in years. To give you an idea how long it's been, PPI Art Series amps (A600.2, A404.2), Quart Reference components, Audio Control SQL's and either JL or Kicker subs were what the top SQ vehicles ran.

The vented box for the ED 8" has a huge port. I'd probably seal it to save trunk space.

Unfortunately, as I no longer work for a shop, the Sony amp is about all I can afford/want to put into the car. I know it's not ideal. Sure wish I still had my old Art Series amps....
