Help me choose a tire...

Ok so I have narrowed my options down to either the Falken Ziex Ze 912 225/40R18's or Kumho Ecsta AST 225/40HR18's for my ms6 on stock rims.

What do you guys think I should go with? Is the 40mm sidewall too small compared to the stock 45mm?

Has anybody had any experience with these tires, any input would be or other suggestions would be a great help, I am just trying to keep the price down. Thanks

Actually, the 40 and the 45 are not an expression of the absolute height of the sidewall. It is the ratio of the sidewall height to the tread width, i.e. a 225/40 and say a 245/40 have different sidewall height even though they are both "40". In your specific question going from a stock 215/45 (96.75 mm sidewall) to a 225/40 (90 mm sidewall) does result in a smaller tire, and consequently a bigger wheel gap, but only by 6.75 mm (.27 inches).

I am running Kumho Ecsta ASX 225/40 R18 on the stock wheels and a stock suspension, and it looks good, but it would look better lowered (don't they all?). I'm not familiar with the Falken tire. What is the treadwear? The Kumho is 420, the OEM tire was 140. That, and the price were my major considerations.

I have the Falken ZE 912's on my 6S tire size 215/50 R17, I'm pleased with their performance, turn in off center is snappy and they really dig into the corners giving you good grip. I drove them in the snow and performance was just as good as any other tire I had used, if that's even a concern for you. Treadwear is rated at 360, road noise even seems to be down played better by this tire then the stock Mich's it came with, the Falken's are one hell of a value.

As far as the sidewall issue, I concur with mysleeper and .27 inches isn't that big a deal.

the falkens are absolute garbage. have them on the msp and compared to the stock bridgestones that were on them, i would never ever ever buy them again. they're quiet but i think compared to any other tires i've had, they blow when it comes to dry traction or an auto-x day.

I agree with the above post. I replaced the stock bridgestones with Falken Ziex 912 about a month ago. They are complete garbage. I dont feel any grip. I ran the bridgestones till they were almost bald and i had better grip. I have to say the Falkens are quiet, but after 90mph, it feels like your about to lift off. The bridgestones felt like i was glued to the streets. Cornering sucks too. I'll probably be talking off the Falkens and selling them, they only have 1000 miles on them. I'm gonna be in the market for some ultra performance summer tires...no more all-seasons.

I have the kumho's and they are garbage in the snow :-) When i bought the speed 6 it already had them...

Mine are worn right down to the nylon after 5k miles on the outside of the tire, so im looking to replace them. They are also pretty noisy, grip has been fantastic though -- at least to me who doesnt auto-x / race
