Experiencing moderate detonation, any input?

Ceric, perhaps you can chime in. I have noticed on a couple occasions some moderate detonation, and almost always during warm-up, while under moderate load, and usually at lower rpm's.

Today it happened again, I had the windows down, radio off, 75 Fahrenheit outside, relatively low humidity, partly cloudy/mostly sunny, around 1pm. Temp gauge reading 25%, or half way to where it sits when fully warmed up.

I was taking garage sale signs down. In manual mode, accelerated when the light turned green, and noticed some heavy detonation approx 2nd gear all the way up to about 3500rpm, and let off the gas after I was sure what I was hearing.

I am very familiar with detonation because I had a 2.8 liter narrow angle VR6 Passat and I put a GIAC chip in the ecu, and I ended up taking the chip out because the engine would detonate all the time under load at low rpm's even with premium octane.

This the exact same sound....chatter/cackling in the top of the motor/pinging.

So it could be the cheap 87 speedway/super america gas and sams club gas I'm using, but as the engine is designed for 87 octane, it really shouldn't be doing this right? Or perhaps it is just normal for crappy 87 octane.

I use LUCAS fuel treatment/cleaner about ever 5k miles or so.

I thought about taking it in under warranty, but have a feeling I'd be wasting my time when they tell me its bad gas from Speedway, or tell me I have a K&N drop-in filter and try to void my warranty, or tell me that the larger than normal holes in the bottom of the airbox have something to do with it.

Either way, I'm sure they would just turn me away.

Any thoughts? Should I use 89 in the summer?

Its pretty low elevation here...about 500ft above sea level.

That is the reason why you should never make any modifications no matter how small to your vehicle while it is still under warranty.

Not sure what to make of it, but I heard that the variable valve timing does not kick in until the engine is warmed up.
Go gentle on the pedal and observe it for a few more days.
Is yours out of powertrain warranty yet?

nope, I'm at 51k, and from a Date standpoint, still good through October of 2013, but I'll hit 60k by then.
I may take it in at some point.
I filled it up today @ Shell with 89 to see if that evens it out.
Its possible that 87 octane from Speedway/Super America could be responsible for it, but then again, I think I would have noticed it last year (summer) as well.
