Exhaust Manifold Replacement

guesstimate.......just remember that once the mani heats up it will expand a good bit. So tightening the bolt within an inch of its life isn't a good idea. I would tighten it until its snug tight, then run the car at idle and down the road and see if it is leaking.

I have broken soooo mannnnyyyy bolts on turbos, including ARP studs, on my DSM's and then I figured out that it doesnt need to be so DAMN tight because it will expand. I ended up using $1 grade 8 bolts from Advance Auto as turbo bolts for my DSM's, after breaking 2 sets of $80 ARP bolts, and the Advance Auto bolts lasted and still work today, even after many track visits and turbo swaps

Well the Thunder is out, and the Steedspeed is on its way. Should hopefully be here by the end of this week so I can install it over the weekend :)

A couple more questions for you guys.

1. Two of the manifold bolts backed out and are missing, and it's impossible to find an exact replacement one. Would a standard flange bolt work, or should I maybe go with studs instead?
2. Also, which way should the bead on the turbo gasket face? Towards the manifold or turbo?

Or maybe I won't get the Steedspeed before I move to Oregon on July 3rd. I didn't realize he was in Canada.. :(

Got mine in about a week ( black steedspeed ).Also I put the bead on the gasket facing up toward the mani haven't had any problem's.As for the bolt's I picked up ten grade 8 bolt's with lock washer's at the local ace hardware store paid close to 8 buck's.

Still waiting on Ken to let you know about that deal. Unless the Thunder is gone??
Did you order the V1 or V2 steedspeed??

Yeah sorry dude.. Thunder sold. I got what I was asking for it and he paid right away, so it's getting shipped out tomorrow.

The Steedspeed is a V2 I believe, although I didn't ask. It's from his new batch so I assume it's the V2.

if you still need a downpipe I have 2 ready to go right now!. not sure how long they'll be around though. 3" v-band, mild steel, 1 O2 bung, 6" SS flex section and all mandrel bends. Clears the A/C too. Cheaper than a POPE...

i will be using special ordered class 10.9 bolts and matching lockwashers when i do mine... theyre standard flange bolts and should be fine.

no, you got class 8. ACE only carries class 8 in metric (except allen bolts). its like grade 5 equivalent.

i will definitely have spares of the class 10 bolts, but i wont be able to get them to you until mid-next week or so... i got the wrong size and i have to send them in for exchange.

Wait, what? Where the hell did you come from with these new 3" downpipes?! I'm still getting the PEP, but yours looks interesting. Is it compatible with the stock turbo?

Also, how much are you charging?

x2 WTF?? PM a Pic and price.
I should be getting my PEP in the next week or so, He's testing one with a local car then welding mine for the my test fittings and impressions, then the rest of yours get ordered up. I have faith we'll have no issues with fitment.

Well it looks like the stock manifold is going back on after all. I can't get the Steedspeed on time, but that's ok I guess.. cuz I don't have the downpipe either. It would make most sense to install both at the same time.

Now I just need to meet some friends with tools and a garage around Eugene Oregon lol.

Hey guy. Just got the Thunder in today. Can't wait to install it. Thanks again.

They came today as well. I've been soaking the stock mani bolts in some kind of really smelly industrial grade PB Blast type stuff all night. I just have to find a day that I don't have anything going on at all so I can tackle the job. I start the second session of summer classes on Monday. FML....

Yeah it's definitely doable in one day, as long as you have all the materials and tools ready before hand. Here are a couple tips I'll share from my recent uninstall/reinstall of the stock manifold.

1. Drain and take out the radiator
2. Take out manifold, turbo and downpipe as one piece
3. The bottom bolts on the stock manifold are a pain to get to, I didn't have any sockets that would fit in that tight space. I used the open end of a wrench, and put a drive extension through the round end to use it as a handle.

Got the Thunder V2 on! It's a lot quieter now. I'll post up a picture sometime today. I also have an Injen CAI coming in today and then the Turbohoses IC piping kit coming in on Tuesday. A buddy of mine is giving me a Greddy BOV so I need to get that welded up too, but by the end of next week we should have a good lookin' engine bay.

Ok guys I'm getting ready to do the install again, but this time with a Steed v2 instead :D

Anyway, I need some new studs. I'm hoping to install pope's downpipe at the same time, so I'll need new studs on that side of the turbo too. Are they all the same size? M8 x 1.25 between the manifold & turbo right? What about turbo to DP..?

all the exhaust studs on or near the turbo are m8x1.25, except the stock s pipe studs, think those are m10x1.5 not sure though

edit: all the intake manifold bolts are also m8x1.25, just fyi
