Exhaust leak + Blinking CEL!

This morning on my way to work, I hit a typical freeway bump, nothing too jarring, but I noticed the exhaust/engine noise changed and the power felt different. A couple seconds later, I got a blinking CEL. From reading this forum, blinking CEL = stop driving ASAP. One other symptom was the idle went damn low, so low I thought the engine was going to stall. So I pulled off and called my shop. Oh, and while pulling off, the CEL stopped blinking but maintained a stead on CEL.

I got towed there, just to be cautious, and they started to poke around. They pulled codes P0037 and P0300, so they thought my post cat O2 sensor was busted. I told them it's pretty new, just ~3 months old. They checked the wires and connections and all looked fine. Based off my story that I heard engine/exhaust noise change, they looked for an exhaust leak. They found one...I didn't look but they said it's pretty significant. They said it's likely been a crack that's been propragating for a while, and the bump just popped it open. They recommend a exhaust system swap (to a Racing Beat system for P5) rather than a patch job.

My questions:

1. Can a sudden break in exhaust cause the symptoms I saw?
2. Anyone have any opinions on exhaust systems? I want a low key kind of exhaust. I'm not too concerned with adding power and not a fan of loud ricer noises.

And they cleared the codes and the car seems to run fine now, except for the occasional random misfire during idle and the muffler sounding different.

Such stress for a morning commute!

well, it seems like any leak can set off the blinking light.. just had my intake manifold gasket replaced TODAY because of a leak that caused a blinking light... My car had the same symptoms as yours, and had the P0300 code...

so this is pretty weird. i drove home with no problems. the car does sound different, which is probably the exhaust leak? i tried to swap the exhaust for the stock one but i don't have the proper jack to get it up high enough.

but it's weird because a post cat leak usually won't cause all the issues i saw. and how can the problems i saw just...go away (i sure hope they went away!!!)? i'm not complaining...but very curious.

i read up on the coil packs and egr(?) but those seem to cause consistent CEL's, whether blinking or solid.

wait, the hole is aft of the cat? hmmm..... I wouldn't think it would trip codes.. It hasn't on my other cars ...

yeah, it's waaaay in the back in the muffler.

the mechanic has no idea what it was since all symptoms went away by the time they took a look...and they didn't want to start replacing stuff randomly.

how hard is it to do the egr and coil pack stuff? i took a look at the shop manual sticked at the top of this forum...but the pictures are confusing for me.

both are fairly easy... theres a how to on the EGR

and the coil packs are just some 10mm bolts that need to be removed...

i've done a bit of forum digging and for the coil pack replacement, i need 2 new coil packs and 2 new wires? probably don't *need* to replace the wires, but while i'm at it, why not?

i've read of coil packs coming from all over the place...any specific ones to stay away from? i'm tempted to just go to autozone since they're close and easy...and if they're really just ~$18, that's not bad...

thanks for the heads up on a egr how to thread. but do you happen to have a link? i did a search for EGR and holy crap that's a lot of threads to sift through.

i also found this thread: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123695730

the guy's symptoms sounds nearly identical to mine. cruising along, throw blinking CEL, then it turns solid, then car runs totally fine. well, mine isn't *totally* fine right now...i can hear noise difference...but that may be the exhaust thing.

I got the autozone coil packs. interestingly, the car has ran worse since the install. not sure if related or not yet since there seems to be a whole bunch of things wrong with it right now... One of the coils had a plastic case, and the other was metal... i'd say go for the autozone coil packs. I think you have to order them online though.

EDIT: www.sparkplugs.com seems to be out of stock on the 2 NGK spark plug wires until mid/end of june.. Mine are on back order.....

cool, thanks guys. i just placed an order for some coils and wires from autozone. hopefully the problem goes away!
