the EVO also has the IC sprayer reservoir in the trunk. you forgot that the STi has an unproven usdm-spec aluminum forrester engine with a short history of pinging problems (talk about losing jdm parts... engine's a big one)... as opposed to the evo's tried and true 4g63... the evo has had a history of clutch problems when driven hard. the bumper beam rust seems to reside in only a very small percentage of evos. sti has better paint than the evo's... which feels like crap. sti's turning circle is smaller. no cruise control on evo.. i don't know about STi... evo gets 2 more mpg on the hwy... evo has larger dimensions... no sunroof available for STi... buschur achieved 11.65 1/4 time with factory turbo boosted at (i believe) 24psi.

i also prefer the 5 speed...

I forgot that the EVO had the sprayer.

With the Forester it's actually the other way around. The Forester got the STi engine but the WRX turbo. All the pinging stories are from states with crap 91 octane gas. I haven't heard of one in Michigan yet.

Oh and the STi has crusie control.

STi for me.

Reasons: Subaru has been doing four wheel drive for ever and they have it dailed in to perfection.

Also; reliability, you can drive a Subaru for ever.

I was looking at both of these cars this weekend. I won't be buying either, but really love the cars. This question has plagued me because they are great, but the cons of one are the pros of another. Personally, I like the look of the Evo on the outside better, but the interior of the STi is actually good. I would replace either stereo so the lack of one is not a big deal. The other biggy is cruise and the sixth gear which I sorely miss in my MSP. Plus, since I drive 12k a year to work, I would rarely use the full handling of the Evo. The STi is close enough that someone of my driving skill would not push either to the limit.

i have driven both alot, all my friends have both, we mod them all and my dad files claims on them so i know what goes wrong with every car ever made. with all that being said, in my opinion, i would choose the STI, only because it handles way better then an evo, i think it looks better and the evos vary one off's to much from factory. i have seen dynos on evos pure bone stock range from 220 to 310 whp. granted the STIS are a b**** to work on.

also if your goin to get a WRX, pay the extra and get a STi or you will be buying a new transmission within 20K miles if not sooner.

my buddy has a sti with rwd conversion and a fully built motor tuned by cobb and that ****** HAULS ASS

either way both great cars, but yeah the msp cant be compared to any of those cars.

MSP with 12k to mod the s*** out of it, i'd say the msp would be much faster then either of the other 2... but if i chose sti vs evo i'd go with sti cuz of the bigger engine 2.5l vs 2.0l so sti has more potential...

The EVO VIII outhandles the STi hands down.
But the STi is faster than the EVO VIII.

Since i last posted on this thread I've definetly changed my perspective..I've been driving my buddy's STi for the last couple weeks now, and I have absolutely fallen in love with it..The evo just feels weak in comparison. Doesn't feel like it can corner as well, even though it does..The STi feels much more stable, granted the Evo handles just as well or better (whatever) but it feels like it takes a lot of balls to push it out there when you can simply float along in the STi..More power, less computer assistance, more fun..BTW, before you buy, go pick up Best Motoring Impreza vs. Lancer "The Final Round." Puts A LOT of light between the two and definetly sells you on one or the other..

"you forgot that the STi has an unproven usdm-spec aluminum forrester engine......"

The 2.5 base engine has been around in Legacys, Imprezas and Foresters for years. The 2.5 turbo is new but really a step up from a zillion 2.0 and 2.2 turbos Subaru has been making for years. They have made these on SOHC and DOHC configuration as well. Not too much really "new" and unproven, just design improvements. What is new is the STi 6 speed and it appears to be near bulletproof, but there is someone out there that will bust an Abrams tank. The adjustable center diff, rear diff. and front limited slip diff. is new and the variable advance cams are new on that basic 2.5 Turbo STi engine. All Subaru engines are aluminubm just like Porsche, Ferrari. aircraft and a ton of others.

I WAS going to say EVO - I like no stupid hood scoop -

But I also LOVE Scoobys and I forgot Cobb is practically in my back yard- about 25 min from my house -

Def STi!

Its not stupid it does have a purpose. Its function over beauty. (naughty)

one word: pinging. while the engine may have been around, when has it been released as a turbocharged version identical to its present status?

That was in early production models only (newer cars have the new maps). Subaru will reflash any car that has a problem. Plus it seems like people that can only get crap 91 octane had the problems anyway.

and remember to pick up the evo strikes back edition and look at the fastest lap times ;).

the usdm sti has MORE computer assistance, if anything, over the usdm evo. the usdm evo does not have acd or ayc, as opposed to the sti's dccd (driver controlled center diff. that can be set on auto). i think people (including myself) need to get used to the evo's handling characteristics in order to find its better handling numbers. any wrx is easier to driver right out the box, esp. if you're coming from a fwd car. the evo just takes some adjustment and finesse.
