I was talking to one of my friends dad the other day, discussing my MP3, He said that a Ford PS6 (Power Stroke V6) would prolly fit into our engine bay. There wouldn't be that much room left but he said it would be possible and he has an extra PS6 at his place, so since my car is locked in 4th Gear we are going to attempt this swap, but first anyone have any doubts, cuz Im not really sure it will work but its worth a try.

if you can get your old setup back in should nothing work out, then I vote go for it! You would certainly have a very unique setup from the rest of us here and it would be cool to see pics and performance numbers on that. But if your car is locked in fourth gear, what good does that do you? Don't you have to get a new tranny, or is one on the engine?

And promp3 asks a good question? Is it diesel? I didn't think Ford made a diesel six.

"extra" engine? Falling off the truck? ;)

From what Ken says (Guy whos gonna help me) He sayes its out of a Newer Ford Mustang 99+? and he sayes that the front and rear mount look like they would match up pretty well, but that was just a glance over the engine bay, we'll find out once I get it towed to his shop

mustangs = rear wheel drive
mp3s = front wheel drive

how will this work out? i know that the 3.8 liter v6 is the same between the mustang and the taurus, but still it can't be that easy of a job.

"Quick look over the engine bay" ain't gonna give you the right measurments.
That engine's from a RWD car... it won't fit.
The only way it'll fit is if you strip down the whole car and give it new front mounts, box in a driveshaft hump, rip out rear suspension and fit a custom Ford rear end in there, fix up the fron of the engine bay so that all the extra crap like AC, PS, PB, Heat etc are either gone or rigged up... Add space for a new larger radiator, create custom firewall to allow RWD tranny to fit. Custom fab and interior to fit around your custom work, then you have to worry about the tourque of that RWD tearing and bending your Unibody frame to bits when you step on it.

That's about it...

Go for it!!

This thread came up before, and got me interested:

I went to the mazda dealer and asked for quoted prices on the V6 in the tribute, taurus, I think even the Cougar...no wait, that's different. Anyway, I spoke to the parts guy, and we looked up the blueprint specs (which were NOT blue, I'm sorry to say) that had the motor taken apart. If you've ever tried to find an unnamed part from Mazda or Ford, and they've had you point to a diagram with all the parts spaced apart, those are the specs.

Well, we got to talking, got him interested, and the calculators came out. The 3.0L FF V6 powertrain will fit quite nicely in our car. the problem is between the motor mounts and the suspension, if that makes any sense. The motor will mount on the chassis, blah blah. However, something about the length of the CV joint, or something, meant the wheels and struts would not sit in the same position. I have been wrestling with the concept for a while now, but the V6 should be an easy switch.

Okay, that's not true. "Easy" as compared to what a switch should be (Like when we put a chevy350 into a ford pinto, made it FR, and raced it SCCA), but still difficult. I didnt check on making a block change (and keeping tranny and radiator). I planned a full front-end switch, keeping the chassis and unibody, etc, but everything motor-related goes. The problem with switches is ECU. I'm hoping that a stock Tribute ECU might still be able to run the gauges/electronics in the P5, knowing mazda all that stuff's the same.

Well, price wise, I cant...oh, here it is....

http://www.protege5.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4845 and my post:
Update:
I spoke to my dealer about swapping out the 200hp V6 from the Tribute.
Pricing (for my dealer) shipped to their door is as follows. For each, it is bare bones (no internals) as I would want to replace all stock parts (pistons, rods, cams) with aftermarket stuff. I could also go to junkyard for small stuff, there are just four things I want brand new and stock:

Short Block: $1513.65 #AF03-02-200

5-spd tranny:
--Case: $365.00 #65PO-17-100
--Bell: $520.00 #65PO-17-150A

Upper gaskets: $150.00 #AJ03-10-SFO (I think SFO, I'll have to double check that, the tech has terrible writing)

So total for basic internals is $2548.65. The rest of the tranny could come from our proteges, and the LSD from Quaiffe.

From this we get a 200bhp block and tranny housing ready for an est 10psi regular running. I will start on fitment issues when I actually get a hold of somebody at Mazda USA that knows what the **** they're talking about (which could take weeks).

Just wanted to get some folks drooling.
Since then I have considered going to a junkyard, but think that either I will get a bad motor that looks good, or have to piece one together.

I told the mazda guy I thought the 3.0 should be offered as an engine upgrade. He laughed, I just stared him down. When I asked the dealer to sponsor me (as kind of a test car), they literally laughed at me.

**** them.

Anyway, that's what I have.

Why does this thread make me think that an MP3 will be in a shop for the next two years while someone tries to shoe horn a rear wheel drive motor into a front wheel drive chassis.

It's been said already and I will re-iterate it, custom fabrication galore.

Tribute is based on a FWD chassis. Easier to swap, but still a pain.

Worth it? Don't think so.

Other than originality, I must ask......WHY???

For less trouble and money you could even get close to that with a well-planned N/A tune-up for our engine...look at chdesign for example...

This is of course if you don't want to go turbo, which doesn't make sense anyway...

You guys are right, considering swapping is the move of a crazy man(silly). Which is exactly why im researching it. More than the actual task itself, I'm just curious, and have been researching the idea for entertainment's sake more than anything else. So before the "you moron, why would you do all that s***, jackass" thing rolls around(bang)(smash), know I'm just looking....

Well, I was considering the FWD V6 for its turbo capabilities. (I know, I've lost it)
Like I said in the previous post, I'm waiting for someone at Mazda that knows anything (which as those of you have dealt with mazda reps know is rare) about specs. I'm trying to see if there is an advantage in block thickness to the V6. I mean, duh, of course, but I'm hoping to find that the V6 has retained the thick ass block used in the Taurus.

It's gonna be a pain, and a joy. The beauty of starting block-up is that you can buy as many factory parts as you want, and custom the rest. e.g., I can use factory gaskets, rings, springs, valves, etc, but change pistons, rods, and cams. And by switching to the "American" 3.0L V6 (in a sense, for parts purposes only), I'm hoping for a larger domestic retail market as far as upgrades go. For example, a stronger crank, rods, and pistons would be SUPER for NOS applications (which I would not do, but would research).

Also, when you're starting with a higher cc V6 motor, the torque gains from F/I increase as compared to our 1900cc I4. For example, a roots-style blower on our cars might get us 120hp (there is no math in that, I'm just picking a nice really high #, dont flame). A super on the Camaro's V8? Helluva lot more.

Again, I'm in the "questions" phase with Mazda. I do not have numbers to back it up.

But I did find out that we can buy EVERY SINGLE part for this car retail from the parts department. Hell, they were asking me when I wanted the block shipped.

If anyone else has more money and time than me (and that would be most people), feel free to take a crack at it. Fitment is not as big an issue for a FF-FF swap as it would be otherwise.

But there is that little part of me ;) that wants to make our cars AWD.....:D:D:D:D I'm such a dreamer.

If you wanna go thru all that trouble then put a real motor in it while you are in there..................13b turbo....................nuff said
