Engine noise at startup?

I just got the car a week and a half ago and as I get used to the car I noticed a little clutter coming from the engine when I start it, for a second or so.
This is only happening at cold starts, once the engine is warm and I switch it off and back on it's fine.

I am suspecting the quality of gas so I'll try another gas station but was wondering if anyone had or has this and know what is it?

I have the same problem... I was getting a lil worried too. When I turn mine on in the morning, it revs high for a split second, then comes back down. BUT, right at the peak, it makes a clunking noise in the engine, and I can feel it in the clutch. (Do you have manual?)

Thanks, do they require you to leave the car with them for a while?

Is there a TSB database or something out there?

Was this only for the 2002 Proteges?
I think mine has the cold start too.
Sounds almost like the fan whacking something metalic when starting in the morning.

I think there is some confusion here. My take is that grishulia is concerned with a "rattle" sound at start-up, NOT the cold engine "rattle" when driving between 1k-3k rpms, which is what the TSB is for. I don't know if there is a cure for the initial "rattle" sound, though my 2003 P5 also has it. To me it almost sounds as if the engine is oil starved for the first couple of seconds, and then it quiets down right away. However, once you start driving, it still has the noise associated with the VTCS plates.

Hope this helps a bit.

The TSB I found on the site is for the Protege. I assume it covers the P5 as well?

I haven't noticed any cold start noises, but should I try to have my dealer do the fix anyway?

I am brining mine in for them to perform the TSB on just to be sure. Plus I want it in there before the customer satesfaction survey gets to me that way I get a 6spd miata as a loaner :D

Mine does this too.. no rattle, but it revs up to 2000 rpm when I turn the ignition, it's kind of startling. :wtf:

All proteges I have ever been in rev to about 2K at start then down to about 1200 then work down to idle as they warm.

It looks like you are right... but I might just bring it in anyway when I hit 3000 miles and get the oil changed since they should provide me with a loaner anyway...
I don't think it would hurt anything if I let them tweak it.

Too bad I bought my P5 50 miles away and the service dealer is just a mile and a half from me... I'll probably get a pos even before the survey.
