Engine blew (oil exploded throughout the side where the dipstick is located)

Hey guys,

My engine doesn't work and it blew on me. My car had a minor valve cover leak and I never raced my car.

Long story short: I drove my car and halfway down the block towards my house, my car made a loud popping sound then turned off right away. I tried to turn my car on and it cranks and just doesn't start. I called my mechanic friend and I pushed the car down from where I was to my house. He came down and I popped my hood. Found the whole side with oil all over the place. Checked the dipstick and there was no oil on it at all.

So does anyone know what this can be and what I should do? Thank you!

When was the last time you changed your oil? Did you check it recently..was there too little or too much oil? Remove the spark plugs and see if there is oil on them. Did the oil come out of the actual dipstick area or did it blow a hole in your block (engine)?

Thank you for responding.

There was a good amount of oil in the car which I was planning to change that day the engine blew. Oil exploded all over the right side but I dunno where it's coming from. Checked the spark plugs and there was some oil on them.

How was the level of the oil?
Is there a hole on the side of the engine where damage happened?
You said oil came out from where the dipstick goes which makes me think that it's possible your PCV valve wasn't working causing your crankcase to pressurize. Or maybe very bad blowby or a bad headgasket.
It's likely that your engine is not starting because there is oil on your sparkplugs which will not allow a spark.
Check your oil level and see where it is at.

does anybody know a alternative replacement motor for a 2001 mazda protege mp3 or if they can get one for cheap???

I didn't see any cracks or holes at all. The level of the oil was pretty normal when I last checked it (I checked it a week before). The PCV valve would make sense, and the spark plugs issue would make sense. Where should I have my oil levels placed at for recommended use? I was thinking of getting rid of the car because it's an inconvenience thus far (wiring is too spongy inside, the air intake is loosening, valve cover issues, etc.). How much do you think it would be to fix the issue? I wouldn't want to get my car towed to a mechanic who charges me ridiculous amounts and then I would figure it would be best to shop around for a good shop to go to and spend even more money when I can get it fixed myself or for a reasonable price. lol

I really appreciate your insights on the issue. It helps a lot.
