mazdaspeed3 first drive on edmunds

"But while the extent of cosmetic surgery parallels the GTI vs. the standard Golf, the hot 3's on-road performance makes this four-door the quickest hot hatch on the market. Tipping the scales at a mere 3,060 pounds, the MPS is 154 pounds lighter than the GTI, and boasts a 64-horsepower and a whopping 74 pound-feet of torque power advantage over its German rival."

Look to MZSPD3.com
for the latest MS3 specs, info and discussion!

Has anyone seen the Oct edition of Sport Compact Car (Vol 18, No 10) yet? MS3 is front and center and they LOVED it!!

They claim to have been the first journalist allowed to test drive the car but were not allowed to publish until closer to the official release date.
They say it's the best factory built street car suited for the track right off the showroom floor.

Haha, just the mag.....Though i love the specs and some of the looks of the Mazdaspeed3, i would NOT buy one. Its just too.....plump for me. It looks much more sleeker than the Mazda3 hatch, but still not my cup-o-tea.

That is a lofty statement when M3, Porsche, and Lotus come to mind (ughdance)

^^^ except for the m3, those are more track cars you can drive on the street. also, they're sport compact car and their target audience probably isn't looking at anything over $40k for a car. that said, it sounds like a great car, but i've never been sold on the look of the 3 wagon. but that works in it's favor because it helps with the sleeper factor.

It seems to me like the MS6 might get called out for being a bit friendly in their hp ratings. This did happen to the RX8, so I just have this feeling the MS3 being rated at 250hp is gonna be producing near that or right at the MS6 in HP. We shall see. :)

it says 263 hp / 280 tq on the cover

Edmunds says 250hp at 5500, and 280 torque at 3000, so which one is right? It's just strange to me when I look at various dyno charts and see the 250hp Legacy GT putting out just as much, and sometimes better whp numbers while rated 24hp less. Either Mazda is being over generous, or Subaru is underrating their cars. It's probably a combination of both. :)

well I think Mazda is still saying "over 250" for hp to be cautious

I feel your pain, Brother. It looks a little "plump" for my tastes too.
But I can't agree w/you that it looks sleeker than the existing 3 HB, which to my eye looks much less bulky. I like the way my HB looks better than the MS3 on several fronts, not the least of which are those wheels. But I would wish mine had the power, handling and TURBO!!

The more I hear about this car, the more I look forward to driving my own! Now If I can just sell the MSP...LOL!

Definitely! Definitely gotta' sell the MSP. "'Course the interior used to be brown leather. Now, it's pitiful red.
I gotta' my underwear from K-Mart... 400 Oak St., Cinncinati, Ohio... Ohio."
Sorry. I saw your screen name and couldn't help myself. I quote from that movie all the time.
But, on a brighter note, I just got this in from another part of the forum.

Check out FI FSDE's post at or near the bottom of page 6. He says he's looking to buy an MSP. He is in Boston though.

Edmund's site has been saying that since the beginning of the MS3 rumors. I'm sure that was just Mazdas target estimate for the HP. I don't think Edmund's has updated their site since more is now known about the MS3. They could be waiting for an actual production model to test before they do.
