I was going to ask this on one of the sound forums but I'm at work and any forum with the word "forum" in its url gets blocked...

I was checking out Eclipse's website and their new Audio/Video source units look really sharp. Models AVN2454 and AVX2494. (the girl is pretty hot too)

Its hard to tell from the photos but I'm curious...Will these units drop right into our double-din opening? Anyone got the demensions of our opening off hand? Eclipse's site says the units are 7"x4"x6.5". I'd love a drop-in solution because I really like the look of the stock unit but I want quality sound for the system I am planning. I refuse to put a single din unit in and there are too few double-din units to choose from.

If anyone has tips and/or photos of their double-din/monitor installs please post!

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, right now, they will fit. But they're still just getting out into the marketplace. I know that Poseur has seen one and played with it first hand. The AVN (with NAV) is selling like hotcakes, though. These things are going to be in a lot of cars...it's the same unit that's in the Lexus, BTW. They just made a few modifications, like preamp outs.

Well, I want one! Any idea on the price?

The AVX looks more appealing to me. I don't need navigation but the 20Gig Jukebox sounds great...
Any time you insert a CD into the unit and play it, what happens is that all the tracks on the CD are automatically recoeded* onto the hard disk in the sequence theyre played. As you play other CDs, the same thing happens, the hard disk slowly filling itself with your favorite music, all the way up to 3,000 song files! If a CD is ejected in mid-song, say during track 5, recording automatically terminates at the end of track 4. If the same CD is reinserted, recording starts automatically at the beginning of track 5.
I was originally hesitant about doing away with the in-dash 6-disc changer but not having to put my cds in after the first time is a great concept!

the AVN is 2300$, I think. The AVX is probably around 2000$ or more...like I said, though...Poseur will know better than I.

The AVX with the harddrive is going to be about $3g. the AVN is about 2400. the one weird thing is that the Harddrive unit does not have any form of pre-outs. (I guess they didn't have room for it) THe other AVX (with the smaler screen) is about $1600. I think the AVN is the way to go, the one I played with was SUPER sweet. Unfortunately, a bit further beyond my grasp tahn I'd initially thought. There shoudl be a couple threads with more details. but yes, they will fit.

Yeah, i was just looking at the pdf docs...

The AVX2494 is the only one with the HD and it has no pre-outs...just 50x4.
The AVX2404 doesn't have the HD but has 5.1 surround sound and 1.8v preouts and 40x4.
The AVN2454 has the Navigation system and only has 0.8v preouts and 50x4.

Eclipse was one of the first companies to make 5v and 8v outputs so I don't know what they are thinking with >2v outputs.

For that amount of money (which does seem a little high) its too many things to weigh...
HD Jukebox or 5.1 surround
low-level preouts or no preouts at all

And the icing on the cake...the AVX2404 has a volume knob (a plus in my mind) but it s on the wrong friggen side (a major minus). Who wants to reach across the dash to turn the volume down? Every OEM manufacturer has had this right for decades...why switch it?

Yup, the 2404 seems like the better deal, just a slightly smaller screen. The other screens are bigger, thus the lack of room for a knob. trust me, they're DOPE, though...

I rapped with the eclipse rep at length about the preout thing. Basically these units are the same as the ones they make for Lexus. They legitimately just kinda tack-on the Pre-outs to mkae them more aftermarket-appealing. But there's really notmuch room left in the little thing for alot of power. He said prettymuch that you could just get a good LOC and be fine... how's that for lame? ohwell... you can't have everything... but the AVN RULES!!! OMG, seriously see if anywhere around you has one. and check it out, they're sooo freakin cool.

This is why I'm seriously gonna check out the new Pio unit...it's single din so that I can keep my pocket, it's got all my pre-outs needed, and it does NAV, etc. I was big on the Eclipse for a while, but the cost and the pre-out stuff kinda turns me off.

Re the auto recording feature:

how does it know the track name /title (unless burned with CD TEXT).

no CDDB to pull data from *shrugs*

Yeah, but the Juke Box idea sounds soooo cool...
5.1 & Preouts ... Juke Box ... 5.1 & Preouts ... Juke Box ...

And then the AVN has the 1/2 octave EQ! another feature I would love to have.

such a tough decision...but the price of all three of them will keep me away for a little while. I'm going to plan my system in the hopes that I can afford one in the future...for now I'll just use the stock unit (which I was happy with until this morning when I visited Eclipses' site looking for 8" subwoofers)

...which reminds me...what do you think of 2 8700 series 8" subs in the back of the P5? Possibly one on each side in custom fiberglass enclosures. I've got a MTX 500watt amp for them. I don't listen to very much rap/hiphop but I enjoy my bass as much as the next guy. I just don't want to sacrifice the space required for 2 10"s...and one 10" or one 12" will break my vision of symmetry (since removing the spare is out of the question).

Umm...some people need some guidence on website design...
http://www.eclipse-web.com

1) I'm curious as to how much these products cost...there are no prices
2) I would like to find the nearest Eclipse dealer so I can ask them...there is no dealer locator
3) I would like to contact Eclipse to tell them their site sucks...there is no contact info!

GRRRRR. Either I cannot successfully navigate their site or they are missing some key information that would help them sell their products. I just contacted what I thought was my local Eclipse dealer and it turns out they dropped the brand. So I need to find another source and since you can't get them online, I'm a little lost here.

The only way to find eclipse dealers is to use their 800 number on the site, and that'll just tell you the one closest to you. It's really sucky...but tweeter carries them, so I would assume they'll be getting these units.

I too am a bit curious about the track naming, does it just store them using some form of number system or what? sounds ENTIRELY too automatic, there's no way they could have a large enough CDDB, and at that one that would keep up with any new albums coming out. Hey dex, how're those carputers coming? anything happening or getting it all mounted in the dash?
