Dyno Worries, Ease My Mind

:
Mazdaspeed Protege 2003.5
Ok, so I dynoed my car on a Dynojet when all I had done to my car was a Forge BOV and I pulled 155 whp, I found that to be ok numbers but my car was pinging like a b**** so we stopped everything real quick. Now I have done a custom FMIC/3" Turboback with Corksport S-Pipe and I am boosting about 8-8.5 pretty steady but I am worried to dyno my car again. Do you think I will be ok or can I do any prep to not get any pinging? I have been told to get some better gas, I usually fill up on convenience store stuff (93 though) because I commute a lot and need to save a little cash but I would be willing to fill up with whatever is needed to make sure my engine doesn't go pop. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, if everything will be straight than I will post up the dyno sheet right after I get it done. Also, should I go back to the Dynojet or should I go to another shop and use a Dynapack? I would assume the Dynojet is ok and that way I could tell what my difference in HP/TQ is more accurately since I wouldn't be switching dyno technologies. Thanks in advance guys/gals!

Mike

Check your plugs, your gap, and run some seafoam.

Also, like you said, better gas could help.

Use BP/Amoco 92, its the best out there IMO. Get one heat range colder plugs. NGK coppers, not sure on the part number but you can find them in a search. I'd worry more if you don't go and dyno the car. You can detect detonation on the dyno a lot easier then on the street. If you still ping with these mods get the DSM AFC. I run the that AFC. At the dyno I ran 9 psi all the way to redline and all three pulls were clean with no signs of pinging at all and my AFR topped out around 11.9

If he's pinging now, the last thing he needs is an EMS. He needs to find the root of the issue first.

My car pings at stock boost with basic bolt ons.. I find my car running around 13:1+ ratio...

I have my plugs gapped at factory specs which is .44 from what the service manual says. The plugs only have a couple thousand miles on them as well.

Sorry for the thread jack.

I was running that gap and the car ran like s***.

I changed to a .32-.36 gap and she's soooo smooth now.

You should be a lot better with a FMIC, less chance of pining but at least add some octane booster to the tank. Some 100octane would be better but so expensive.

I'm willing to pay $5 a gal, cause the MSP isn't my DD, but no one around here sells anything over 93 unleaded. I can get 110 leaded all day long, but no high octane unleaded gas around here.

Throw a gallon or two of that in when you dyno. It wont be full leaded in case you sill have cats, it will increase your octane and threshold for dotonation. I run C16 from time to time, when I know that I'm going to the track I'll add 2-3 gal.
