Has anyone noticed that our cars pick up ALOT of road noise???
I just rode in a buddies IS300 and it's like riding in a sound booth compared to the MP3.

Anyone done this yet?

I dont know jack about the stuff, do the different grades really matter(original, premium, xtreme), where is most of the noise picked up from (seems like the rear wheel wells and floor boards), how much of the stuff do I need to buy get rid of alot of the noise??

thanks

I am currently dynamatting everything in the car. I am finding that are some panels that have no covering, typicaly these are the back of the exterior panels. However I think its the lack of Jute or Rebound in the car that is causing the noise. These are purple or greenish color materials that look like pressed together wool and carpet. it goes under carpets and is usualy under the rear seats of cars and in the doors also glued to the back of exterior panels.

I agree with you 100%. I hate the noiseyness of our car. But the lexus is not really something we should compare it to.. The Lexus has a sand filled barrier in the firewall between the engine and the cockpit of the car.. This makes it almost 100% soundproof, but its pretty hard to wire a sound system in one.

I never said I wanted my car to sound like a Lexus? I just said I noticed the road noise after riding in one and want to do something proactive to reduce the amount of road noise I currently have...

I've never done it personally, but I do know of a person who dynomatted his whole car. He took out almost everything, including the carpet and all door and trunk panneling and dynomatted under it. It can be kind of expensive bying all the dynomat, but it sounded GREAT. He did it primarily to make his stereo system sound better, but it had the side effect of eliminating almost all of the road noise. I've been considering doing this as well, but the thought of taking out all of the carpet kind of scares me a little.

good point... I wonder how we could test and see where the majority of the noise comes from and fix the main points.

I'm with Kooldino. Dynamat is very heavy. I know people that have done their whole car in dynamat, then had to upgrade their springs to stronger ones because of the weight.
Also gonna kill the acceleration. Just a thought.

Exactly, I dont want to wallpaper the entire car, just take care of the major problem spots. I'd guess the rear wheel wells are a huge source of noise and maybe the insides of the doors. I'd hate to have to do the whole floor pan...

How about you 1st MP3 in NH, what haveyou done so far with Dynamat and how did it work?

dynamat

Heres some info on dynamat....... I took everything out of my car with less than 2000 miles. Be selective where you put dynamat. The whole car DOES NOT need to bee covered. A lot of small pieces works better. Dynamat does not block sound, it reduces resonances (vibrations). I dynamated my floorboards, trunck and door panels. To help it even more I then sprayed everything with dynasheil, a spray on dynamat. Total weight is 80 pounds. It wont make your car faster, but when I close my doors I hear a rewarding thud instead of normal car clanks.

Let me know if you need more info

I did the rear doors metal, the rear deck plastic the trunk metal. The road noise has basicly not been in anyway improved yet. I ordered another pack of dynamat extream so I can do the front doors metal + plastic, rear deck metal, fire wall, and floor. But I am also adding jute, the weight is not very significant since I am going to be putting in W7 sub woofers.

I was thinking about Dynomating my car as well, but if you were going to do it I would start with the trunk and see if that kills most of the noise, which it should. Because most of the noise does come from the wheel wells. Im hoping to do it soon, Ill let you know how it goes.

Has anyone used Cascade Audio's Gatorskin ?? The product has the same use as Dynamat, but at a slightly lower price. I need to do something to lower the amount of road noise. It's not as bad with the Dunlops compared to the Studded Snow tires, but still need to quiet the little beast down.

So how didi it turn out with dynamatting the trunk ??? I'm thinking about doing the same to our Vivid Yellow MP3

Dynamat would be a good way to add more weight to the rear of the car. hehe Thus increasing the tossability when you let off the gas out if turns. That also means more fun.
