Double-din installation question

I recently installed the Pioneer Avic-D3 in my 2006 3i. I ordered it from Crutchfield and it came with the Metra 95-7504 installation kit. After hooking up all the wires and making sure everything was working, I pushed all the wires back and slid the unit in. After some adjusting (and cursing), I got the unit all the way in and secured. However, I noticed that there is about a 1/4 inch gap between the bottom of the Metra dash piece and the top of the factory A/C controls. I've seen installation pictures where people have used the Metra 95-7504 kit and the unit sits flush in the dash with no gaps anywhere.

My question is whether I have installed the dash kit improperly. The only solution I could come up with is that I left a fair amount of wire coming off the Pioneer as well as a fair amount of wire coming off the factory wiring harness adaptor, so I'm thinking that all those wires are keeping the unit from going in all the way. Please let me know what you guys think. Any help is much appreciated.

I had the same problem when I installed my Kenwood DDX7019 double-din unit with that dash kit. I figure we probably have about equal amounts of wires and adaptors hanging out the back of our head units and came to the same conclusion about the wires causing the problem, so I tried to tuck as much of all of it as high up as I could. I ended up using some extra wire ties i had to "pull" up some of the lower clumps of wires. That seemed to do the trick as the gap went away.

Of course, after pulling the system out the next week to connect a subwoofer, I had to adjust things again to eliminate the gap again when putting the unit back in.
