Does your MSP Clunk?

Mark,

I am dropping off my car tomorrow morning. I think I will just get a loaner from them until I get them to fix it. I am going to work closely with the tech on this and give him some suggestions for fixing the problem. I think he is willing to look outside the box on a situation like this. I may be out of a car for awhile but if it means getting the car fixed, then I don't mind.

I agree with you. They've had mine for week, so I'm sure they wouldn't find anything else if they kept it even longer.

They said the sound is gone and I'm sure it is since they've greased the bushings. The only thing I can do is take the car home tonight and bring it back in a week when it starts clunking again just to prove that simply greasing the bushings isn't going to solve the problem. At least next time since the greasing didn't work and everything is torqued to spec. they'll realize something else is wrong and look into it further.

Good luck in your investigation as well.

Mark

I got my car back on Saturday. They replaced the factory bushings with the 'D' model bushing and greased them up. So far, after 2 days of driving, I don't have any problems yet. I told him that this bushing thing was generally considered to be a temporary fix and that he'd most likely be hearing from me in the next couple of weeks or so. I'll keep my fingers crossed hoping I'm wrong. In the meantime, keep us updated on what RacingBeat has to say, newf.

they do come with the d bushings.

I got the Dealer to check as soon as the part list was available on the speed. 156D for the Speed. Same ones their putting on the MP3's now.

I think i'm starting to hear a clunking sound as well..and i'm i so cal where it doesnt really get cold. There's only one dealer that i can go to here..(unless I drive 2.5 hrs to LA) so I don't know how to get a second opinion. The other thing is, is that I don't have as vast a knowledge as you guys do about car mechanics, so I'm kinda nervous to go there and ask them about it. I've never had to put up a fight about auto repairs...usually just listen to what they say and take their word...But I'm learning a lot from this forum so hopefully I can make a case when I go to the dealer.

I have a Mica MSP with 1K miles on it, and no mods as of yet.

Hope I can help out with this cause...
thanks

The clunk I hear is a fairly deep "dum" sound as if somehting is bouncing around inside the trunk. All you can do is have the dealer drive around with you and listen for it. I have done this once and they did not hear it, it does seem to come and go. I am starting to think it happens when the roads are wet, not necessarily when it is cold. You really hear it on speed bumps and curbs, now the dealer might argue that the sound is normal but have them explain why it only just started, and why it is getting worse?

i guess i should drive with the music off and listen how many times it happens and when and where it happens...

Clunk=suckage

I love my car and my dealer but I thought I had a tire iron loose back there. I kept think wtf is rolling around in the trunk.
It is 21 degrees and icing though. Never heard it in warm yet. But hey in Texas tomorrow it could be 68! I have only had it for 4 days. I will fix this s*** myself if they cant do it.
I have a Lexus Tech buddy who can do just about damn near anything I want and make it look squeaky clean. Of course I am then bound to him for all his PC problems...
I have the extended bumper to bumper 75,000 mile warranty so they will have a long time to get it right :)
I'll be sure to monitor this forum.
Thanks for the info people.

Alas, today I came to the conclusion that my MSP also clunks.
It's one week old.... I have put 1200km on it.

She clunks merrily away...

Will call the dealer tomorrow.

I don't have the slightest idea of what that"clunking" sound is that you all are talking about...I've got almost 4,500 miles on my MSP now, and haven't heard the noise. I had about 1,500 before I lowered it and then the next 3,000 it has been lowered. Is it possible that I changed the angle of how the bushing sits, or the angle of what is pressing against it??? I am in my car throughout the day, in and out of shopping center driveways, and over speedbumps. In the few cold days we've had, the rain, and heat...nothing. If you guys that have the problem have seen your bushing in question, is it actually showing wear?? If so, maybe I'll look at mine and see what condition it is in...Let me know....

has anyone tried to custom fab the mount in the picture at racing beat? just an idea, i have no clue if this is possible.

I think the car has to be driven more extensively in cold climates to get the clunking to start. A handful of days at lower temps won't get the bushings to start to fail.

It sounds like there is something small and hard bouncing around in the trunk.
I notice it more when either the left or right rear suspension hits a bump, when both sides hit a bump at the same time, there is no sound.

My first post here.

I picked up my car 2 days ago and have put about 120miles on it so far. I don't have "the clunk" as of yet. However, when it does come, and I feel certain that it will, I plan on printing out this entire thead and handing it to the mazdaspeed mechanic when I go in to get it looked at. I only wish that I knew about this problem 3 days ago. I don't know that it would have kept me from buying the msp, but I certainly would have made it known that it was a concern. So...Hello to everyone and I hope to do my part in getting this problem resolved.

I live in Wisconsin BTW...lots of bumpy roads

Pseudo clunk

I thought I had the clunk. But in fact it turned out to be a can of tire cleaner in the trunk.
DOH!
(hand)

I like my sig though so it stays...

Took my car to the dealer this AM.
No surprise here:
They are ordering new rear sway bar bushings, and I will have to take it back to have them installed in a day or two.
They also did the new alignment specs, AND found an OIL LEAK (I complained about a burning oil smell).
So, step one in the clunk war is completed, now I have to wait for the clunk to return.

Alright folks,
I've got the new sway bar bushings on, but get this. It's a 156C part number....
Same part number as the other ones, but it's a C instead of a D...
Full number:
BN7H-28-156C.
Also, my dealer has ordered a replacement kenwood deck for me, so hopefully that will solve my ejection problems!

yep, sounds like your spare tire is bouncin around in the trunk. you guys are lucky it sounds like there will be a fix soon. ( prayin for Newf) We have been livin with it for a while.
