Do Protoge's Make Good First Cars?

i dont think 90 had a tt.. 93 did tho.
my buddy had like a 86 or 87 beater 300zx.. but was runin mad boost.. had a starion intercooler wedged in the front.. and 50 shot of nos.. it was great till it blew up an caught fire in the street -=\

proteges are really good first cars

they're very safe, reliable, inexpensive, good looking, and easy to drive

I think that if your 16 and already looking for racing that you should go for the protege. Its slow, but you'll learn so much and be much better prepared for more power later on.
(mswerd)

Fast cars + unexperinced 16 yrs= blown motors, crashes and massive speeding tickets.

Could someone link me or jsut tell me price range and the packages and which one i should get. Am i looking at an MSP?

like i said..
great econobox, reliable fun to drive.. blah blah

BUT
he said he wants to race and go fast..
id hate to break it to you guys but 16 second and higher quarter miles are not racing.

my friends Z is stock more or less, he has run threw like 3 sets of rims in the past year though lol. only one set has even made it on the car. he kept buying insane deals on ebay and turning them for profits for various reasons. at one point he got a set of 19inch HRE's for something south of 1200 bucks but there was fitment issues so he sold them for like 2300 to an IS300 guy. Anyways this kid goes to UT so he doesnt get to drive the Z durng the semester b/c parking is more than rent around campus so summer is a good time for him. did i mention he works at henessey motor sports during the summer too. . . .did i mention i hate my bestfriend LOL! lucky bastard.

Im 16, and dude leme tell you, Forget the street racing, its not worth it. If you could f*** up and get a ticket, kill yourself, your friend or someone you love. Its not worth it, keep it on the track. I myself am looking for a MP3/P5 or MSP. The Protege is by no means fast but it is a fun car to drive. I've driven quite a few cars and while my friends P5 lacks the power of my moms Boxster, it feels just as responsive behind the wheel (minus the globs of low end power that a flat 6 makes) Its just a great car. If you want something fast(er) look at the Mazda3 w/ its 2.3l that puts out 160hp. If you can find a MSP then look into that. But please dont race it on the street, you'll get so much more out of if you take it to the track.

So young yet so much wisdom. Jhova speaks the truth.
i agree

you are about to be 16 and i guess you've played a lot of racing video games and just itching to try it in real life. just remember there are innocent people out there that you can kill and there is damage if you hit something and things on the road can be unpredictable sometimes regardless of how much experience you have, but don't worry... thats why you buy insurance, insurance covers STUPIDITY.

the protege is not a race car. get a civic... you'll know what i mean if you've watched the civic nation advert, all those wanna be racers, you can be just like one of them.....

Gride ,have you got the message . We h,ere,at the club wish you good luck ,enjoy your new found freedom ,but please remember that with this comes a price ,welcome to the adult world and responsiblity .

I'm 17 and the protege is my first car, My friend has one and that kind of made me do it, I love my car (drive) , it's not the fastest thing around, yet I got 4 tickets already (ricer) I doesn't matter what kind of car u have, it's how u drive it that u should be concerned about. Amen

YOU ARE SIXTEEN! YOU WILL NOT RACE!

If you do, you will kill or seriously hurt someone. I would put money on it.

I want to race on the track like 1/4 miles and mayb some sloalums (sp sorry im feeling under the weather) and ill be doing a little street racin
You'll need to pick one or the other if you really want to get into it in the Protege price range of cars. And stop watching TV so much. You're 16. Learn how to drive for a few years first. Street racing won't do anything but have you kill some innocent family in a minivan or something. If you want to race, first grow up and then find a track to race on. Street racing isn't racing, it's just immature little boys pretending to be something they're not. They're losers with low self esteem that want superficial attention because they'll never amount to anything in their pitful meaningless lives. Find a track to race on, son.

You just described me perfectly =[ . Ill stick to the track fo sho.

u guys bash the P5 too much it isnt that slow...well for day to day driving it has some pep u know like red light green light lol kinda driving but for racing...anyway lol i member when i got my first car and my mom though i was going to be stupid in it and i was THIS close to gettin a 90' 240sx but mom said no :( and insted i got my old 92 accord 2dr. 5 spd greatest car i ever had i couldnt tell u how many curbs and garage doors i hit with that thing and it STILL worked...old tanks are better first cars then new ones, thier cheaper to buy and cheaper ti fix when broken! good luck with ur decision@

I'm sure a lot of you are going to disagree with me here, but I'd have to say that a newer car like a P5 or an MSP is a bad idea for a first car.
Get yourself something cheap like a 1990 626 or similar. If you get an older car you will spend a lot less up front, wont pay the higher insurance rates of a new car. and most importantly, when you crash your car (and you will get in an accident sometime), parts are readily available in junkyards and are inexpensive.

To boot, you will become more experienced in repairing your vehicle and maintaining your vehicle, as it will be slightly less reliable. I never wanted to use this phrase, but it builds character... seriously it does. It gives you a good reference point on life, and helps you learn to budget.

As for racing, you should spend some time driving; give yourself at least 2 or 3 years. Don't bother with drag strips; you'll find mostly the ricer crowd there. Spend some time with your local SCCA club and run some SOLO 2 races. AutoX will help you learn how to control your vehicle under the most extreme conditions and will help you become a better, more responsible driver.

Most over; don't be an idiot on the road; racing is for the track only. The price you will pay in increased insurance, fines, and guilt is just not worth it.

There's my 2 cents
