Disabling DRLs on Gen 3 / 2014+ Mazda 3? What about fog lights without headlights?

I bought an I-touring with tech pack 2015 and really like it, it's a great little DD that keeps miles off my C6, but I really can't leave well-enough alone haha.

I plan on getting the nav SD card so I have nav, and doing window tint.

However the stuff I really wanted to upgrade was the lighting, I wanted HIDs but they only come on the S-GT and I didn't want to spend so much for a DD.

I ordered 9005 (low beam) HID kit, and a set of CREE LEDs for foglights, they'll go in as soon as they're here...

But in the mean time... Has anyone figured out how to disable the DRLs?

Also, has anyone figured out what to do so you can run parking lights and fogs at the same time, but not have the headlights on?

Why disable the DRLs? Does the DRL function for 2014+ use the low beams, instead of the high beams as in my 2012?

I got a 2015 3 a little while ago, and for the first time in all of my cars I ACTUALLY (skimmed) READ THE MANUAL! Quoted from the 2015 manual itself:


" Some countries require moving vehicles
to have their lights on (daytime running
lights) during the daytime...
...(Except Canada)
The daytime running lights can be
deactivated.

So the conclusion appears to be:

1. member Seven just wants to waste our time, not actually read responses to his question
2. there's no known reason to disable the DRLs, but it can be done in the current generation, in countries where it is legal (thanks, Mazda32105 )
3. no one knows if the fogs can be run without the low beams

Fogs without low beams is not legal in some places so I think it would likely be a hack rather than a preference setting. I do understand the legitimate desire to do this to avoid bounce-back of headlight glare from the fog, but this only works if the fogs are bright enough to serve as headlights, and they usually are not. When I added my own fogs to a car many years ago I wired them so that they did not depend on the headlights, but with cars since that have had fogs factory wired to work only with headlights I have seen no need to change them. My Mazda3 doesn't have fogs, and I very rarely miss having them.

I like my fogs but I wouldn't mind the no-fog look as long as there was a cover over the cutouts.

Heard you can just pop out the fuse for the DRL. I haven't checked though. And yes, they use the high beams for DRL not the low beams.

I just took mine to the dealer and had them turned off :/
