Mazda Protege
Ok so right now i have a 99 protege, im selling it to a lady
Im stuck between getting a newer protege or a volkswagen jetta
The jetta is a turbo but the protege isnt
Anyone know anything about jettas are they better than proteges?

by the way im looking at a 01-03 protege es

go with the jetta if you want to have tons more aftermarket support
they have bolt on kits that give you more horsepower then the protege can ever have
looks are about a tie, handling....idk ive never driven a jetta lol

if you want a a daily driver with mods then get the protege
if u want a modded car as a daily driver get the jetta,

if that makes sense lol

Yeah i would get the jetta any day but i hear they have bad electrical problems which was my only concern

what year jetta? the 1.8T is an infinitely better engine than the FS but jettas are known for electrical problems, certain years being worse than others.

i'd definitely ask if there has been any history of electrical problems and make sure you play with every single accessory to make sure it functions correctly. that wasn't exactly a good era for VW

yeah i mean i love the design of the protege for 01-03 its a major step up from my 99
I mean im not a street racer i just want a nice car

the jetta will feel nicer than the protege will. it'll have a nicer interior, the materials will feel of better quality, and the door will have a much more solid thud than the protege. the big drawback will be its electrical gremlins

and thats a huge reason why i really dont want to get the jetta because of those electrical problems

Plus the Jetta is more expensive to maintain. They are fun to drive and they handle great, but the maintenance is a killa.

i go with the protege,
1. i beat one in a street race (im 100% stock :D) and him idk?
2. they have extreem turbo lag, my dad has a passat and its serious lag
3. just Mazda > VW

get the jetta honestly. The jetta would probably be easier to mod and upgrade for better power than the protege

the protege looks better... and could possibly handle better as well.

jetta! get the 2002+ they have a k03s and they push 180hp, chip it and youll have 200hp with 250TQ. performance wise jetta wins, but only if you get the turbo. if your really getting a 00 then i dont think the jetta came with a 1.8T, only a 2.slow and a vr6..atleast get a 01+, they came with a 1.8T but only 150hp.

what is your price range?

I wouldnt get either of these choices, but if I had to choose Id choose the volkswagen over the jetta

even though I suck badly at electrical work, Id rather have electrical problems that blown motor problems after I mod the car (if you want to go with a decent turbo that is)

Got rid of y 2003 GTI after 6 months of transmission problems (replaced with twice with refurb, dealership also lied about voiding my warranty etc) for a MSP

electric problems on a car are a nightmare. There are so many things that can be wrong and its really tough to find the exact cause so it does up being a lot of guess work. Ill take a weaker engine in a dd than having my windshield wipers go on every time i roll down my windows

yo, just because vw made some lemons does not mean all of their products will be lemons..i have owned 2 mk4 jetta and 2 mk4 golfs. never a single problem..and plus we have vag-com scanning tool, it will tell you if a speaker is unplugged, vag com will tell you just about anything you would like to know....so umm... its really a myth at most..(bang)
sureeee....be happy with a blown motor, wires are much easier to fix(whip)

agreed

while I am stronger suited to fixing the blown motor, I would still rather fix wires than that...and it costs much less

plus with wires you can generally trace where each wire goes to find the issue

then again, I'm also bashing to the extreme on the pro, if you dont plan to boost it then it is great

but at the same time, I dont consider a pro to be luxury (nor the jetta) but out of the two the jetta is much nicer
