Depreciation of late model CX-9s

I have to pay annual car tax in Virgnia, so got a bill a few months ago. In Aug 2022 I bought a CX-5 nearly base model (S Select or something like that) for $29.8 k (not incl tax). At the same time I bought a CX-9 Touring with "package" (MSRP 2k) for 39.1k (incl $500 rebate for buying the CX-5). This was actually 2.5k off MSRP, which was remarkable for 2022.

Anyway, the Carvana offer is 27k for the CX-9 and 24.7k for the CX-5! And the car tax valuation (supposed to be NADA dealer retail but presumably average mileage) is 27k and 24k, respectively. The crooks make you pay 5% of this valuation every year!

I sold my 2018 CX-9 Sport for around the same as my original purchase price in 2022, so quite a change. I wonder if it is mainly the discontinuation of the CX-9 that's the main factor or turbo cylinder head issues, although it supposedly has been fixed post 2020. When it was 7 months old the Carvana offer was 34.5k. One thing that I am not sure about is if Carvana or NADA recognize that it's a Touring with 2k package. They ask dumb questions about add on features and don't capture all of them. The MSRP was 41.65 k.

I guess the lesson (maybe) is that you should not buy a car model that's about to be discontinued. I should add that my manual Mazda 6 Touring from 2016 sold for around what I paid for it in 2022; sold by the second owner with 50k miles! I think he profited about 2-3 k based on his purchase price. Point is that the 6 was discontinued. I nearly bought a 2018 6 manual with low mileage instead of the CX-9 but someone just nabbed it before me after it had been on the market for like 3 months.
