Dealers must be under the screws

Ok, just read the title, and I'm not sure that makes sense...I think I might be mixing my metaphors...

Anyway, I took my car in for some service at my dealer and was basically dissatisfied with the level of communication I received. I had a leaking transfer case, for which they had ordered parts, but apparently they found another problem (also a leak from the tranfer case, but requiring a different gasket) so they had my car for a week without calling me to let me know what was taking so long.

When I picked up my car, I let them know I was unhappy and, instead of just letting it slide, I told the service manager that I felt like a couple of free oil changes were in order. Without hesitation he agreed. About a week later I got a letter for one free oil change, and a call asking me to bring my Mazda service survey with me to the dealership, and they'd give me not one, but two more free oil changes or credits of $30 x 2 toward any other service. They have called me since then at least 3 times reminding me of my free oil changes and wanting to know when I can come in (the problem being I'm not due for an oil change yet).

Cutting to the chase, I know service surveys are important to dealers as far as ratings and "president's awards" and whatnot, but I'm wondering if the poor economy is really putting the pressure on dealers to make the customer happy---as if maybe the word has come down that some dealerships might be eliminated if they don't make the grade.

So the upstart of all this is I'm going to ask for the moon at my next visit (30,000 miles). I have some surface rust on the stainless steel door sill on the front passenger side that I want them to replace. The chrome foil flying M on my intercooler cover is wrinkled up---I want that replaced too. Normally, I would let minor things like that slide, but it seems as though it can't hurt to ask.

I must be close to my next scheduled service, I'll check the records tonight and see if I can book it soon. Maybe I can talk to my service manager about some of the mods I'm planning to do, and make sure he'll see to it that my warranty is still valid.
