Damn Whistling Noise!!

Well I am sure it makes you feel a lot better knowing it's just the stupid muffler.

I didn't see in any of the responses if the noise went away when you lift off the throttle. My 2002 MP5 that I've had for two months has a high pitched whistle/whine sound from 60mph and higher. It goes away when I lift off the throttle but comes right back on again. I don't hear it with the windows down but it is evident with them up and cruising on the highway. A/C on/off, recycle/fresh air, radio off/on (odd wires mixed crossing?) makes no difference.

Hmmm I wonder if someone slipped one of these in your exhaust when you were sleeping. (evil)

Makes a sound similar to a turbo from your tail pipe.

I get the whistling also now. I have a 2003 protege 5 with autostick and get the whistling ever so slightly in regular drive but when I have the tip-tronic set in it whistles at high RPM,s.... any ideas guys?

Mine used to whistle aove 6k. Then the VICS fell apart. No whistling since the $3,000 repair. Noise may have been the VICS screws backing out into the airstream.

I've grown acustom to the whistle/chirp. I've discovered mine is from my fan belt. I've had it tightened and relubed a couple of times but it still comes back. It seems to be a distinctive mazda feature lol. I've just learned to add it to her list of unique qualities. I mean who wants a car like everyone else ;)

Well, here's something interesting. My P5 was also making a whistling noise—identical to the one heard in the video. It's been making it for quite some time, and only under heavy acceleration when the tach hits 5,000+ RPM.

The other night, my CEL decided to light up and say hello. Checked the gas cap, it was tight. So I scheduled an appointment with Mazda dealer to diagnose it. Diagnosis: failing CDCV.

$440 CDN, whistle is gone. After leaving the dealership, I accelerated up to about 5,500 RPMs and no noise. Not that I could hear anyway. I tried a couple more times and nothing.

I almost considered purchasing a new muffler as mine's a little over 144,000 KM old—but, I haven't had any exhaust problems yet, other than a broken bracket.

I guess there are a number of things that can cause these cars to whistle (like a sexy, new 3 hatchback driving by). I'm just glad I didn't have to fork out 3,000 for mine to disappear.

Just thought I'd add in my 2 US.

Well, I'll take that 2 back—whistling noise is back... or never really went away I guess. Perhaps it is the muffler. Gotta get the car e-tested in order to renew tags for December anyway, perhaps that'll reveal the answer?
