Daily driver, what to mod and not to mod

:
Titanium MazdaSpeed Protege
Just like the title says, I drive my car every day and want to make it a better daily driver (ie. a little more "zoom zoom", with less hesitation, and not much louder than stock). I was thinking about getting an upgraded smic, hard pipes and a unichip. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks
Shaun

i think smic and hardpipes (turbohoses) w/ bov for the sound...if you like, unichip (corksport), intake (injen/aem), and downpipe (apex) would make your daily driver a very badass car for a reasonable price.

what is your budget?

the SMIC is a great upgrade for you, it will actually raise your boost level a bit becuase it has little to no preassure drop, vs. the stock unit... ans unless you plan on going to REALLY high boost levels (which you have already said you aren't) it will serve you better than a FMIC due to the shorter track.

also, look into a SRI or a CAI, and a downpipe/midpipe combo, maybe even a cat back exhaust as well, but I would advise Borla or Racing Beat if you wanna stay pretty quiet.

Hi geomatics_tech, nice to see finally some Calgarian with MSP on the forum...(canada) , and Flames fans too!

you might want to consider swapping out the exhaust, and FMIC. SRI would better easlier for our snow.... once you swapped out the exhaust you'll really notice the gain.

I would not touch the suspension just yet since we have really ugly snow... but if you have a winter beater, then I'll swap out the springs too.

fmic seems like overkill for a daily driver - i guess it depends on how fast you race to get to home depot (or other everyday errands). you show those soccer mom's who's the real hot s*** ...

Get turbohoses hardpipes and SMIC and a greddy type-s. Don't get a boost controller. You can also improve your exhaust a lot with the Circuit sports cat-deleting midpipe. Or you can just go to a local muffler shop and have them do it. There is no point in getting a bigger cat-back the restriction is still there. An intake would be wise. I would go with either the Perrin or Turbohoses short ram. Then just get some good tranny fluid, some rotoworks rotors (great mod!!), and then start decorating your car with CF accesories or whatever you like. You will have enough power with those mods to be a very satisfied daily driver. PM **********. He can get you most of the stuff I mentioned. If you have the $$ to get a lot at one time or buy it all from him he will get you good deals too.

If you dont plan to do much, an SMIC is a good idea. I would do that, hardpipes, intake and downpipe.

Thats what I have always planned on doing, all that plus the front engine mount. I drive my car daily and need a nice reliable car, but also the hesitation kills here in houston. Its nasty hot and humid so heat soak is almost instant. I plan on getting the turbohoses smic when it comes out along with the hardpipes and their short ram with heat shield when the less expensive one becomes available. Also I would like to get the circuit sports catted downpipe. All this I believe should make my car much more exciting to drive, plus you should get a bit better gas mileage. (rockon)

Thanks for the ideas, keep em coming.

I recently bought an Auto Exe grille, front lip and a 2003 spoiler. I think its going to look pretty good and will probably be picking up a HID conversion kit in the near future.

I am for sure going to buy the turbo hoses smic + hard pipes, a down pipe and mid pipe, tranny fluid (red line mt-90, or red line super light shock proof), and I really like the idea of the rotorworks rotors. Im not sure about the intake though, I just dont want the turkey, will it be that beneficial? Does anyone reccomend the unichip?

Thanks again,
Shaun (canada)

Dude get the turbohoses sri, you will love the sound of the turbo spooling, plus supposedly with this intake there is no turkey.

If you get a Greddy type-S (or any other BOV for that matter) and run a dual setup when you get your turbohoses hardpipes you will not have a turkey with the upgraded intake.

BTW, there is no way an intake can cure the turkey sound. The better the intake (less restriction) the more the turbo will spool up and the more turkey you will get when you let off the gas and the TB closes. Just FYI. The only way to get rid of the turkey is to either blow-off or recirculate that air.

I would definately recommend getting an intake. Look at the run of the stock intake piping. Is all that piping necessary?? At the very least get a K&N drop-in, but I would highly recommend getting an upgraded one and running the dual BPV/BOV setup. I run that now with my car as a daily driver and it is awesome.

Another Calgarian with a MSP new to the forum. Hey Geomatics I just switched my manual tranny to redline MT-90 ~$30CAD, but I found that it made very minimal difference to shifting quality. As far as using GM synchromesh I chose not to due to it not listing its weight and wanting to stay within warranty specifications. I will next try the Kartboy shifter bushing solution, overall I find the quality of the tranny dissapointing. I also want to make my MSP a little stronger ~180 rwhp, but will probably just upgrade the intake and a new SMIC when the cheaper one on the forum comes out. I previously installed a turbo kit on a miata from sourcing out parts. I find turbo upgrades in the MSP insanely expensive (uhm) in comparison(eg some FMIC+pipes kit for over $1000+ USD or 2 simple hardpipes for $400USD). I mean seriously you could buy the whole car for $15,000USD. I love my MSP but I sure as heck would not of chose it as a platform to make a racer using aftermarket parts, and I think any one who does the "big" dump of cash into it will have big regrets when they get walked on by a $5000CAD 5.0 mustang with a $1000 blower or turbo on it.

FYI.

I am modding my car with the same plans in mind. I don't want to compromise ride quality, driveability, or add alot of noise. So far I have only added a K&N drop in and a Circuit Sports SMIC. I am confirm that the SMIC eliminates heat soak and seems to give back a bit of boost that was lost with the stock chiller. I do have a manual boost controller but I haven't put it on yet. (Waiting to buy gauges). I just got my turbohoses hardpipes today with the HKS BOV. I will put that on tomorrow and provide an update. I also plan to do a catted downpipe and run about 12 psi. I think this will be a pretty stealth and reliable set-up. Stay tuned.

you mean FWHP, or just WHP will do...sorry for being a dick, but man, we have FWD cars, and everyone says i have such and such RWHP, lol, not razzing on you, just everyone...lol.

Good for you. Like I said in my previous post I am also planning on putting in a new SMICand intake. I think Mazda should be ashamed that their product came with such an inferior IC for this setup. I think you definitely will have a stealthy car but at 12psi reliability may be a different issue. Don't forget the MSP engine was designed to be normally aspirated. You must also have a lot more cash than I do because I would feel pretty stupid at blowing up my engine that is still on warranty. Think long and hard what Mazda is going to do when you bring in your car with a hole in the block and moon shaped rods. They will be very thorough to make sure the bill probably 3-4k will be yours due to tinkering (just the forged rods run ~$1000). You are basically deciding to almost double the boost with the same injectors and stock fuel delivery system(IE no Haltech or other stand alone upgraded ECU). You will not be that stealthy when you detonate your engine. My point is that the MSP is a great daily driver, but my advice for mods would be strictly bolt on intake,IC, and maybe an exhaust(but will be louder and probably not legal with no cats). If you go down the slippery and expensive slope of 12psi then prepare to spend big $$$ to do it right. Which by the way expect to recover about 1/10th of the cost of when you go to sell. I just know through personal experience with a JRSC Acura you reach a point where to do more speed upgrades it cost so much you wonder if you should have bought a different car as a platform. My 2 cents on good MSP upgrades

Some good points....Although I am already aware of the issues with increasing the boost. I am pretty conservative when it comes to mods. I will start with the stock numbers and gradually increase it. My guess is that I would be happy at about 10 psi, but even if everything looks good, I won't go above 12 psi. There will likely come a point where traction will become an issue. Keep in mind that almost doubling the boost can be doable with a better chiller and associated tuning. Some people are going well beyond 12 but that's not for me. I do have the cash to rebuild the entire car or even buy a new one but I like the car because its different so I will stick with it for now. I appreciate your comments, but I know my limits as well as the MSP for my set-up.

you guys are always dissing the stock set-up.....try using it to your advantage rather than throwing it out.

13.4's damn consistantly and over 320 qtr mile passes.....plus 28 + mpg. And you think its really THAT bad???

Intake, boost controller to slightly up the boost, SMIC.

Hey... just noticed your name, are you studying/working in Geomatics? I did my GIS Cartographic Design Specialist and i'm working in the industry now.... what do you do?
