2007~2015 CX-9 intermittent starting problems

2009 CX-9 with 130,000 miles. Every few weeks it does this. The car has been started and driven around during the day so it is warm.

Then, you put your foot on the brake, turn the key, all the lights on the dash light up, but the engine will not start.

You try again and again and nothing. Same results.

Then after a while you do the above & it starts.

The battery is strong - got a new one, I have cleaned the connections twice, the shop said they tested everything and could not find the issue.

Today, it would not start the first two times. Then I turned the key, PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND IT STARTED.

Any clue to what this is? Or to test?

Does the starter motor engage or not?

You put your foot on the brake. Turn the key and all the lights on the dash go on and there is ONE CLICK. It does not go click, click, click, click, click.

Sounds like either a bad neutral safety switch or a bad engine ground wire.

Thanks. With putting it in neutral and it starting I was thinking maybe a neutral safety switch too.

yeah could be that the car doesn't see it in the P position sometimes
