crutchfield : custom orders?

I've been told that crutchfield will make custom orders for dash kits.
Is that true?
I mean.. I need a double DIN dash kit for my '06 Mazda3 but the only dash kit I've seen is the Metra single DIN one (it's sitting on my desk right now so I know it's single DIN).

What do you mean by custom orders? Ordering a part that isn't in their inventory or custom bulding a dash kit to house a double din unit?

I wouldn't be surprised if they will order a part they don't normally carry if you are ordering a bunch of stuff for your car and the don't stock the kit for it. However, I've never heard of them doing custom fabrication.

Perhaps the best thing for you to do is buy the single din kit and modify it to hold a double din unit. It's not easy but it can be done without too much trouble. Check out the fabrication forum at www.mp3car.com for some great ideas. THe guys over there put double-din sized screens in their dashes and have lots of photos and howtos you can read through. You might even find a few with Mazda3s.

Wasn't there a Metra kit that could become a single din as well as a double din? I'm not sure about custom orders but what I would suggest is to go to Crutchfield.com and go into a chat with a sales rep and pose that question.

chuyler, thanks for the link. I hate doing the work myself but I guess I'll never like doing it or get good at it if I don't actually *DO* it...
It's about custom orders, since I've been unable to find a double-DIN sized dash kit *anywhere* for the mazda3. Couldn't find it on the website so the guy must have been talking out of his ass.

SuperProtege5 : thanks for the idea. I'll do that.

Another option is to find a local stereo shop and ask them whether they do custom work. Just make sure you take a look at some of their previous installs before having them do work for you. Most reputable shops will have a photo album of their installs.
