My son gave me a 2010 CX9 with an inop cruise control which I need to get working. He said it hasn't worked since he bought the car in 2012. Any ideas? Thanks.

Find the fuse that controls the cruise control and check it. If it's good then you need a full scan of the vehicle with a decent scan tool, without that your grasping at straws.
Fuse is good, will scan. Will a scan include the cruise control?
You need a professional scanner, not just an simple OBD scanner that reads the generic codes common to all vehicles. It reads all the 'modules' (computers) in the vehicle and gives codes for each if any are present. There is likely some manufacturer specific code on one of the modules that will give you a clue as to what's up. A good shop can run the scan for you and print or email you the report.

They do but a local shop may be more more cost effective. It's really a 10 minute job with the proper scan tool.
I couldn't find the fuse in the owner's manual does anyone know which one it is? The shops want $150 to $200 for just the scan which I thought is outrages. Can anyone help? Thanks.
So, the fuse is good, but you don't know where it is?
As odd as this may sound, you can download Forscan for free and get an OBDII reader (with MS/HS switch) and scan for codes yourself.
You need the reader with the switch to see both the engine and body modules.
I bought a cheap OBDII reader (like $20) off Amazon and have used it a few times to scan for codes and such with Forscan. Worth the investment.

Here's a question for you... Do you know if the Brake Booster was replaced before he got the CX9?
I replaced my Booster roughly 2 years ago and despite getting Mazda OEM,the non adjustable rod was a tad short. That allows the brake pedal to be just affected enough to not trigger the brake lights,but not allow the cruise to be set.
I ended up putting a little 3m rubber spacer between the brake sensor and pedal with some electrical tape wrapped around to secure in place.
Just something else to consider before you start throwing $$$$ at it.
