could this be lsd failure?

hello everyone, i guess you could say I am a newb to the forum, but hopefully not to my car. To get straight to the point I believe I have experienced the dreadful lsd failure, but I'm not sure (don't worry i've read every post about trans. and lsd failure, have also searched). Here is the scenario: come to a stop sign..wait...then pull out...took off about quarter then to half throttle, nothing ridiculous. As i change into 2nd gear i notice a grinding sound, thought i might have not engaged the gear entirely so i go ahead and shift into 3rd gear, give it some gas and thats when things get sticky... i notice the rpm's raise as if in neutral just revving, but at the same time i hear a very loud and horrible metal on metal grinding sound, go to fourth, same thing. As not to destroy the transmission i pull over immediately. I pull over and attempt to diagnose the problem, I find the clutch is not the problem, it still engages. The problem occurs after the clutch releases (as if you were taking off). I attempt to drive it back to my house but find that the car will not move whatsoever, trying to take off only results in the horrible grinding sound and no movement. Now, all of my gears 1 thru 5 will make the same grinding sound, however, when in reverse the car acts absolutely normal, no grinds, nothing. All of the post I have read dealing with lsd failure seem like this should be the case, but at the same time sounds nothing like what I am dealing with. I would REALLY appreciate some help on this one, I dont want to spend anymore money than I haft to. My attempts to save for an sr20 for my 240, are now ruined :(

yea thats the same issue I had....though mine moved a very little bit in regular gears so I didnt try reverse (wouldnt go over 5-10 mph at best and sounded HORRIBLE)

I suppose in each case its going to crack differently so that would be why your symptoms might not line up exactally with anyone elses (being able to move as opposed to not).....but I can almost gaurantee to you that it is the lsd that has snapped

sucks bro, I was so pissed when mine went...

hmmmm...

really appreciate the input on this one guys, i guess i will be making a purchase of a new lsd! (sadly)... think it would be beneficial to go with the quaife? or should I just get the updated and welded lsd?... o yea im not making ridiculous power either. just fmic, corksport exhaust, cold air, proper engine mounts, and the splitsec afc controller. by the way the splitsec afc is the best 365 bucks ive ever spent on that car! once again thanks and hopefully i wont be spending more than I haft to.... the quest for the sr continues

yashooa, the pictures you directed me to are painfully reminiscent of what I too went through especially the picture with your protege on the flatbed truck :(

Yeah, that sounds like your LSD alright. Get it replaced with a Quaife and you'll be set... but it'll be expensive.

I have been running the updated/welded LSD for a year with no issues. I got it from ProtegeGarage in less than a week.

quaife isnt needed unless your shooting for over like 250whp/tq

even then the welded stock lsd is plenty

plus there is some machine work that you have to do to install the quaife and its like 3 times the cost haha

that is exactly what happend to me i started rolling from a stop sign and then give it about 3/4 throttle and shifted i heard a grinding sound. and i went ahead and went to third gear and it wouldnt move. the good thing is that i owned a shop and i got all the work done minus the lsd for 100 bucks lol that was just cost of getting the new one welded and royal purple trans fluid.
GL man if i had to pay to get it fixed it would have been far over 1000 bucks. :(

Yep, I was 2 blocks from A-CON with my daughter in tow and the damn tranny went just as I let my foot off the clutch and gently pulled away from the red light. I gave it a little gas and ZING ZING ZING ZING barley pulled off of the road. It sucked!
It was over 100 degrees outside and the tow truck ride back had no AC and cost me $245.00 It was 80 miles from my house!
My daughter was not a happy camper.

I agree I was making enough power with my mods, 20PSI with a bigger turbo and the stock block to destroy the tires in the first 3 gears and my welded LSD had held up well.
Don't get me wrong the Quaife is badass but just not 1500.00 worth of badass IMO.

It is honestly to me....I went ahead and upgraded to the quaife because I dropped in a built motor and bigger turbo and I didnt wanna risk it failing again...

but Im planning for higher hp

if your not looking for higher hp then there is no need for that though

yeah but you have to think that there is people out there who can not afford a 3K limited slip in there tranny when you can have a decend weled one for around 350 if you get it for around 300 bucks used.

yea thats what Im saying...the cost for the gains are not worth it...if you were shooting for over 300 whp/tq then I could see getting it, but if not then there is no point and your wasting money lol

giving this some thought and with the addition of other posts i have read. I think i can safely say that it was a chain of events, 1st thing i noticed was the wheel bearing on the drivers side was going out ,2nd i noticed a strange whine from the trans. in 2nd gear...or when downshifting for that matter. 3rd thing i remember was the horrid grinding. yashooa, that really sucks man, i was luckily right down the road from my house, and right beside the auto repair shop... 45 dollars was all i had to pay for my tow...im never that lucky!
but the good news is my msp should be back on the road in about 2 weeks!
(keep in mind the symptoms described were not one after another, it was a drawn out period of time)

I have a built motor, and I was already running up to 20PSI on the stock block with an upgraded turbo and a host of others mods.
The stock LSD can take a lot of power no problem you just have to get it welded. I will be running over 20PSI now with my new motor and I am going for as big a number as this motor can put down the LSD (after being welded) is not the issue the gears are. It would seem that 3rd gear is the most likely one to let go at least from all the ones that have died 3rd has perished more than the others.
