Coolant smell

MP5, it sounds like you may have too much pressure in your cooling system especially when its hot. You should try taking the cap off when the car is cold and running it till the thermostat opens, it may spill out but it will get any air that is in the system out. Otherwise if your reserve tank is at LOW when its cold then you shouldn't get spilling.

Slug:

Coolant to me smells like maple syrup or a sweet smell.
Others say it smells like "My Ass and Licorice" ...

yeah i was told that when it is cold it should be at low adn when it gets hot it will rise to full but it seems as if the mazda manufacters may have filled it to much but dang its been ovrflowing for 5 months now

Finally some visual clues ... the coolant level in the overflow tank appears to have dropped ever-so-slightly. I bloody knew I had a tiny leak somewhere. After an hour or so of driving the coolant level is usually up to the HIGH level and it is a good centimeter below now, still above the low level....

So any advice on pinpointing the leak - there is never any fluid on my garage floor and the only evidence is the coolant smell (ass+licorice is an excellent description) and perhaps some tiny dots of some residue on the splash guard around the lower radiator hose.

I always define the smell of coolant as uncleansed, stagnant [insert part of female anatomy here] :D. Sorry, but thats just what I think it smells like :).

This weekend my dad was in town and at my place, we got home from a relatively long drive and he thought he smelled coolant, although I didn't smell anything. We checked the levels and everything looked good, but he told me to keep an eye on the reservoir to see if it changes. I will look for any drips in the spots you guys mentioned.

what kind of women are you with? LOL

LOL, luckily one with cleansed, non-stagnant parts :). But in college, even some of the damned finest girls had some weird stuff going on down there :). Must have been "that time of the month" or something.

Also, during high school while working at a drug store and cleaning the womens bathroom, you can definitely tell the difference between the women's room and men's room.

BLAH! I need to stop before I make myself sick (puke).

Well, I have been into the dealership twice. First time they cleaned off a few drops and suggested it was spiled during the turbo install at the port. Second visit they reduced the amount of coolant to be at the high line when at operating temp. Well, now the coolant smell comes and goes but I am definately losing a slight amount of coolant - very slow leak. Perhaps only leaks when under pressure. Perhaps only when engine/pipes are really hot and turbo is spooling?

As for the smell being like female anatomy, well, if this doesn't stop (and the clunk) then I guess I have a new name for my car.

Are you referring to the clunk from poly bushings? Thats natural to the material when connected to metal. Try lubricating with silicon lubricant.
