Competition from the Dodge Journey

If you look at the entry for the Mazda5, it's got an interior picture for the 2008. Very tiny, however. Article also gives the 08 EPA rating as 22/28.

From the numbers you can tell that the Kia is already outselling the Mazda5.
I also thought the hp numbers for the Mazda5 was 157, I see they rate the 2008 as 153hp.

I just don't get why competitors like the swing-out rear doors ?
Sliding doors FTW for me.

Its interesting to me to see the 5 listed as a "player" in the segment when the sales figures show otherwise. The relationship with Hyundai and Mitsubishi shows in their use of a 2.7 liter V6 as the engine of choice. Hopefully for them it has nothing to do with the Hyundai "Delta" series architecture, that engine is a stinker in many respects. Mazda really needs to build a speed5 to give all these other "others" some competition.

We don't need a speed5, we have the CX-7. There's a power suv!

I think that is problem No. 1 for the Mazda5, there is no category for it in NA. CX-7 is an SUV and the Mazda5 is not (and does not pretend to be, yet everybody here makes it compete with Minivans, SUVs and Crossovers as there are no other choices :()

The CX-7 is 400lbs heavier than the Mazda5. Which makes it 600lbs heavier than a MS3.

And the CX-7 is also down 20hp compared to the MS3. And it's not available in a manual transmission (although the 6speed AT would be cool for some people).

But here is where you inadvertantly make a point. Dropping the MS3 engine into a MZ5 would make it out perform a CX-7 at a lower price point.

Hinged: Handle side impact better thus better seat width (less buffer zone) . Less electrical/mechanical problem. Better 3rd row access.

Sliding: Space efficient. Better 2nd row access. Possible power opener/closer. Less parking lot rage. ;-)

Yeah, I think it's gonna be direct competition. Interior is inferior, but outside styling isn't that bad and performance whoops the 5... power anyway. However, I would never find the need to purchase a Mazdaspeed5, should it ever become available. Performance was low on the list for me looking into a family hauler and contrary to incompetent reviewers, the base 5's power is more than enough.

It will kick ass in sales simply because it's a Dodge and it's got a much more mainstream package than the 5. However, the 5 has a more unique following anyway, so I'm not sure that just because the Journey is a success will translate into the 5 being a failure.

:) <-- Still satisfied he got a Mazda

It is an SUV (to me, let me clarify before we get into another classification dilemma ;), that is a no-no, but not bad stuff.

Downs:
  • 4 cyl gets 173Hp but 4AT :-(
  • SUV
  • No Manual Tranny

Ups:
  • city 11 liters/100 km equals 21.38 miles per gallon (US)
  • highway 8 liters/100 km equals 29.40 miles per gallon (US)
  • R/T, me likes that
  • Price

Maybe more of a Rondo competitor? The only good thing is: If Rondo comes with the SX and this one with the R/T chances of a MazdaSPEED5 are more likely (like 2.13428%). Downside, I have no money for a MazdaSPEED5, and wife will laugh if I wanna trade :D
