clutchless shifting???

They seem to be complaining about that one too. I've been surfing some of the wrx/sti boards. I was looking at getting an 05 STi.

At the track, I was pulling it into neutral before cluthing in. It seemed fine, but I was not putting it back into gear without the clutch.

Its not illegal to be in neutral. And I don't see it as being dangerous.....considering i've been driving for a really long time now, and i always do it and i've never been in 1 accident or even close. I down shift only when driving hard and going fast. Any other time you put it in neutral and coast way before a light and you'll slow down enough that you barely even have to touch the brakes. I don't see why this is considered dangerous. how can you not controll a car just because it isn't pulling. If you turn the wheel it goes where you turn....so what about that is there no control. And as far as hitting the brakes hard if you know how to use a steering wheel properly you don't have to be in gear. Sorry but i've heard alot of people say that. And i have no clue why they think this. I've played around trying to lose control in neutral and it won't happen?

I didn't say it was hard, but the trade off is ruining your syncros and causing at least $1200 in damage. Therefore it's stupid and VIRTUALLY pointless.

For yet another example, shifting into nuetral everytime you begin braking saves wear on your tranny and brakes, but the trade off is you're coasting in nuetral everywhere which is dangerous and illegal. Therefore it's also pretty stupid.

WRX trannies eat s***. Just about every guy I know who owns a wrx has a tranny problem, they suck. Come to think of it thought, Ive never really know a car that doesnt have a crappy tranny.

so wait for floating gears say if you rev it to 3000 rpms and when you shift to second it drops in at 2500rpms to do this without the clutch you rev to 3000rpms let off and when it hits 2500rpms you shift to 2nd?

jersey-emt- Not to get into another argument about nothing but...... Clutchless shifting DOES wear the synchros, and the gears. I say this because:
1. There is no way that you can rev-match the engine/tranny perfectly.
2. This means that the synchros have to work anyways, and in alot of cases harder than when using the clutch.
I say that it wears the gears, I say this because if it makes a grinding noise, its the gears grinding.....
In my opinion it would wear the synchros faster not usinf the clutch than it would using the clutch, however it is just my .02

actually i dont know if this is the same thing but i just found out u dont have to hit the clutch to take it out of gear. is this bad too?

Coasting in nuetral IS illegal in places. I am not going to cite traffic law, but Bob Bondurant has said(and written) it before MORE than once and it's been brought up here before. It is not the lose of power that I have heard explained as a problem. It's the fact that you would have no way to make quick evasive action if you coast in nuetral.

well im not doing it on a regular driving bases, that would be pretty friggin difficult, but to show someone who doesnt know and amaze the crap out of them is the goal,... its like "hey look at my foot... look at me shift..." then he replies ".......??!?! wtf??? how the f*ck did you do that??", hmm its just a cool thing, but i just wanted to let you guys know, and what the crap? driving in neutral is illegal? thats bullsh*t!! i do it all the time, it saves gas...

5th is probably more believable, since its quieter... but maybe i just dont remember sound of stock exaust, and yea, my friend with wrx has different tranny, his got messed up getting on the highway
