clutchless shifting???

hmm i found out a new driving style today, but supposedly you can drive manual transmission cars without using the clutch to shift? my friend with a wrx told me this as we were riding in my car, he told me about it but told me not to do it until he showed me on his car, but i couldnt help it and tried it anyways... i got it in a few gears afterwards without grinding,.... its pretty friggin cool, but i would like to know more about this fun new thing, so if some of you know how to do this pointless action, give me some advice?

its suppose to only wear the sychros if i do it wrong, but also extends the life of my clutch, its not supposed to do any harm to the tranny, so i dunno, before i tear up my car, i would like some input of some other drivers

i know you all will probably say, dont try it, its stupid, youll mess up your car, but i just want to know how to do it anyway, heh im a noob

I do it all the time when I drive a semi-truck... its called floating the gears... and to change gears you have to rev-match the rpms to the gear you want to go into... its not hard... and when I had my left knee surgury I did it ALL the time, cause my leg brace made it hard to clutch.

When upshifting, I believe it works out to be actually slower. This is because you have to wait until the revs drop enough in the next gear to make the transition. Any sooner and you'll grind, and if you miss, you'll grind.

However, when shifting while revmatching to upshift you can do it without wasting any time.

replacing a clutch is a SHITLOAD cheaper than replacing syncro's
you miss and you will melt your syncro's, the trannys in these cars are nowhere near the strength of a WRX

**** the clutch, save the tranny

fixing tranny = $1000
new clutch with labor = less than $500

shift at 3500 rpms in every gear and it will slip right in.. just don't try it going into first... because it's impossible to get into 1st without clutch unless someone push starts you... or you're rolling down a hill

but yeh i've tried it before and i was proud of myself for going from 1st to 5th without using the clutch... but the clutch is there for a reason.. so once you've tried it, don't make a habit of it haha

eh im just seeing it as a show off skill once i get good at it, it seemed fun and i was amazed that i know so little about cars.. but yea i dont think ill use it all the time, its kinda like heel toeing rev-match engine braking crap i got good at doing, i dont do it all the time but its just cool doing it, i guess im just the typical highschool kid who doesnt know crap about cars and is messing up a good one. but the way i see it is... i pay for the car so i should be able to learn as many things as i want

One morning I was driving to a work training class at 7:30am and I was tired as hell. Well, im in first just cruising then I shift to 2nd and I then shift to 3rd. A second later I realize I had just shifted into 3rd without even touching the clutch. I almost pooped my pants because I could have damaged something. Good thing I didn't. So I guess I won't be trying that clutchless shifting any time soon.

WRX trannies eat s***. Just about every guy I know who owns a wrx has a tranny problem, they suck. Come to think of it thought, Ive never really know a car that doesnt have a crappy tranny.

Like everyone has said floating gears is pointless. It's like power braking, it's fun but doing it is beyond stupid.

You wanna impress people? Keep practicing your heel toe shift and double clutch; especially for down shifting into turns. Nothing is cooler than the look on your passengers face when you slow the car down in one fluid seemless motion, and still enter a turn 25 MPH faster than they thought you should have.

It's not pointless at all. If done right, there is no wear on the clutch or synchros at all. Plus, it's great in slow moving traffic where you're constantly shifting from 2nd to 3rd and back.

I didn't say it was hard, but the trade off is ruining your syncros and causing at least $1200 in damage. Therefore it's stupid and VIRTUALLY pointless.

For yet another example, shifting into nuetral everytime you begin braking saves wear on your tranny and brakes, but the trade off is you're coasting in nuetral everywhere which is dangerous and illegal. Therefore it's also pretty stupid.

Clutchless shifting does NOT ruin your synchros, in fact it PREVENTS wear, because they are not being used.

But ******* up while floating gears DOES. It's not a Mack truck use the clutch.

i'd rather use the clutch than worry about rev matching but thats just me...its just a protege, not an enzo
