cleaning air filter***How often?

How often do you guys clean your aftermarket air filter? I do mine every 5000 miles with the other maintainence.(oil, rotate tires, etc.) Is this too much?

I would think at least give it 10K miles. K&Ns go for 15,000 I think

How do you guys clean your air filter. I was always under the impression that MP3's came with K&N filters. I just looked at mine and was quite disappointed. Anyway and suggestions on cleaning would be greatly appreciated. thnxs

I use a K&N kit. Just brush it off, spray on the cleaner, let it sit for about 10 min and then rinse it off from the inside. Always make sure to rinse from the inside so stuff doesn't get lodged in. Then let it air dry. Spray the oil on in an up and down motion. Make sure there are no white spots. Then I let the excess oil run off for 5 min or so and reinstall.

i do it every 2-3 oil changes. since the car is lifted anyway, mind as well check on the air filter. living in tucson is really bad for the filter. it gets dusty after 3 months, and after 9, it definitely needs a cleaning. i think a good rule of thumb is to check at every oil change. yeah... that's my new rule for everyone.
