Since I am not sure about this, I'll just throw it out there....
Is it possible that the money from AVs actually goes to maintenance and upkeep of this site? I mean think about it - it's the same deal as tv or radio. You have someone who wants to advertise a product to a large audience. In order to capture that audience, you pay for the privilege. It helps them (AVs) sell more product and shows that they are a reputable company. As they get more business from the larger client base, they will be more inclined to produce more products for the target audience. I'm not saying that the non-AVs aren't reputable, but without paying their dues, they don't have much skin in the game. You may not get the best support or warranty help from a non-AV as you would an AV. Make sense?
Now what's done with the money? My guess is maintenance and upkeep of this server, cost for additional disk and backup, ISP costs, domain name costs, etc. It can't be cheap to run an active forum like this.
If someone wasn't charged money for the upkeep of the site (again merely supposition) then it might be running on a 486/33 with 32 MB RAM and a 56K connection. Or even worse, enry or antoine might be asking all of us to chip in to help defray costs.
