Check engine light on 1.6 L 2000 Protege

This has been going on for a while. Sluggish pickup only on acceleration. Idles fine. Check engine is misfire cyclinder #2. Cleaned EGR last weekend and ran fine for 1 minute, then started sputerring.

I have a new fuel filter (have to drop the gas tank to replace).

I am starting to think it is the injector on that cylinder.

Things to check?

Also, which cyclinder is #2? There are no marks on the wires.

2nd one closest to the driver side. do the plugs/wires/or coil packs need changing?

I did replace the plugs and wires for the 2 that are standard. The second and fourth have the module thing on the top.

One thing I also noticed, it sputters only when the rpm is goes down to idle and then I accelerate.

I have the same problem you had with the engine light and the same signs. What eventally fix your problem?

plug in a DST and check your codes, i ave one coming up for my o2 sensor off the manifold

I have 0421 and 0171 and the motor seems like is jumping or something when im running i know i have to change the fuel pressure regulator im thinking on a universal one. But i dont know if that might fix the problem.

My 2000 Protege LX would sputter at idle after I changed timing belt and accessories.

After changing intake manifold gasket and cleaning out idle position valve it now only fluctuates a little at idle.

Why would you change the fuel filter if it was so difficult to access?

I had the bucking and check engine light when accelerating yet perfect idle and mine was a mixture of things the first was the egr then the intake tube and lastly the coil packs. Since replacing all those things my car runs like new and I have had zero issues with it hope this helps!

0421 is because of your catalyst, and 0171 is because of your fuel trim (alldata)

oh im not sure what that means, i just went on all data for you and looked up what the codes meant

What he said p0421 is catalyst inefficiency and p0171 is bank 1 running lean. Buy those seem just indicators or ur sluggish engine problem. I still think u should go pick up a good NGK set of wires with good new coils and properly gaped spark plugs. Good wires go a long way!

I still have both codes!! And the engine still with hestitation when im on the highway. I just changed the wire and put a new valve cover gasket.

Check your O2 sensor. If its giving a bad or false reading the ECU will try to correct for it.

the second O2 sensor is new (probably like 8 months) i bought from NGK.com. i have obd scanner and the 02 sensors said OK, EGR, cat converter, etc.
