You also can have locksmith make a key that will open the doors, but will not allow you to start the car.[/QUOTE]

I want to do this on mu 2010 cx-7 with just a metal key to have in a Hide-A-Key and have my spare hidden inside the car.
The locksmith said there was a chance I could screw up the electronics and have to have it re-programmed.

Any opinions?

I don't see how it could screw it up, unless you try over and over again to use the key in the ignition. The door locks don't have transponder readers as far as I know.

We bought a key with a transponder (no FOB) from amazon with the chip in it ($15). The local locksmith was kind enough to cut it for us and we programed it ourselves using two keys that was already in our CX7 computer.

Insert the first key into ignition let the car cycle on but dont start it, as soon as the car cycles take the first key out and quickly do the same with the second key. Quickly insert your new key that needs to be programed and turn it to the on position let the car cycle on.
