My mazda 3's cd player doesnt seem to be able to read CD-R, is that normal ?
I tought most people would want to leave copies of their CDs in the car so the originals donc get stolen, so it's basically a required feature of a car cd player, isn't it ?

Try it again with another CD..
My factory CD player plays CD-r's as well as CD-RW's

I was shocked that it could play CD-RW's.
When playing CD-RW's I notice it's more sensative, meaning it will skip from time to time.
But with CD-R's and regular CD's, it's perfect.

Too bad it doesn't read CD text.

I'm not sure with the deck in the 3, but sometimes certain brands of decks cannot read certain brands of CDR's.

it works now

If it can help someone, I managed to have it work, I just have to make sure I select Disc-at-Once/96 in Nero and burn at a lower speed. When I put the CD-R in the player, it takes 10-20 seconds until anything happens but after that it starts playing correctly...

Yes, I experienced this problem before! I could always play all the CDs that I bought from HMV and other CD stores. But for SOME OF the ones (CD-R, CD-RW) that I have burned, I got some problems playing those CDs with my mazda 3's audio single-CD disc player. So I did 2 things, and now I can play all the CDs now!!!

1. I asked the Mazda to replace a new CD player for me since it is still under warranty.

2. I notice that the Mazda 3 CD players can only play certain brand names of the CDs. I am sure that they can be the SONY and Fuji CD-R, but not Verbitan and some other types.

I have a single disk CD player (NON MP3) and it will play any disk I put in it.
Most of CD's are good quality, but I recently bought 100 disks for $9.99. They are so cheap that about 1 in 10 has an obvious visual defect. So far, I've used 3 of them for audio and they all work perfectly fine in my car.

I have heard of people havin g problems in the past, so maybe it's also dependant on the burner that is used or even the speed they are burned at. (I burn mine on a 24x laptop drive - Dell)

I haven't burned any discs recently, but a friend has given me one. All of my discs work perfectly. Some are dated back to 2000.

It seems to work now, but when I put the CD in, there is usually a 20-30 second pause before anything happen. That's why i tought it was not working.

that pause is not normal...

Shouldn't be like that

well...
Now I use my laptop burner (with the program Nero and Easy CD Creator) to burn the audio cds with a speed of 24x, or sometimes 48x. They work fine now~ HaHa, I guess one of the reasons is that I got a new one-disc CD player in my mazda 3, and the other reason is that I don't use any cheap CDs for now..haha...only use SONY and FUJI ones now.

I use the cheapest chinese made disks on the market... I then put a put a paper label on the top of them and they work fine..

Without the label, they scratch if you look at themthe wrong way!!

Perhaps the quality of the Chinese-made cds that you have bought is AS GOOD AS the Sony and Fuji ones! (hump)
haha...I never place any labels on those audio cds that I have burned. I only use a permanent marker to write all the song titles on the CD. ^___^

I use Nero (no damn wizard version though). Some things that I've learned to do that help the quality of Audio CD Burns:

1. Never burn higher than 12 x
2. As mentioned above, use the 'Disk at once' write method.
and on the "read options" tab, I keep everything set like this:
