I'm considering a Bosal Cat-Back for my P5. I plan on installing an AEM Short Ram, and am confident this will get me between 3.5 & 5.5 hp gain.

Anyone know what additional gains I would get by installing the Bosal Cat-Back?

Thanks!

not a soul on this board REALLY knows....even though quite a few of us have it...it fits great...it looks great....it sounds great....the FUN METER is pegged....and the BUTT DYNO says YEs YES YES!!

but as far as anyone actually putting their car on a dyno BEFORE and AFTER....NOPE...no one has.

I called Racing Bat about 2 weeks ago. They dynoed their new catback and found gains between 2.5 whp and 4.5 whp from their $450 catback exhaust. Most people will get about 3 whp from an exhaust system. It does not do much for the price you pay. It is less than 4 HP at the flywheel for nearly $500 after shipping and tax (if applicable). That traslates to about $125 per HP!! You can have a system custom made using an universal muffler for less than $200 that will give similar results.

I see that Mazda offers a "sport exhaust" for the P5. I'm trying to find out if this is the same as what is called the "Mazdaspeed" exhaust. The "Mazdaspeed" looks like an axle-back system, but if its the same as the Mazda "Sport exhaust" (For pictures of the Mazdaspped system see:

http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/spider48/Protege/Exhaust.shtml)

I can get a "sport exhaust" from mazdastuff for $200 plus shipping. I like the looks of the Mazdaspeed, but like I say, I need to find out if they are the same exhaust system as what Mazda dealers offer.

I wonder what the gain is from the "sport exhasut" (Mazdaspeed exhaust?).

I'll try and call Mazdaspeed tomorrow and see what they can tell me.

Mom,

OK. I'm confused. The dealers definately have a "sport exhaust" that is an accessory for the P5. I know that there are subtle differences and a muffler from the MP3 will not fit the P5, and vice versa.

Let me put it this way - did you buy your Mazdaspeed exhaust directly from them? If so, what was the cost?

There is a anohter guy I buy accessories for my P5 from - he saw the site I listed above, and swears that that exhaust, that is called the Mazdaspeed exhaust, is the same exhaust sold by Mazda dealers. That is why I'm confused.

Thanks!

There are 3 different exhaust with 3 different part numbers sold at the dealership. I do not remember the part numbers, but of the exhaust are for the sedan and 1 is for the P5. The 2 for the sedan are the racing beat (last digit of the part number is 8 for sure), the other is the Mazdaspeed (last digit of the part number is 9 for sure). The only one available for the P5 is the Mazdaspeed (last 2 digits of the part number are 10 for sure!). I paid a "special" price of $185 plus tax.

With the understanding that it for specificially for the P5, I think the Mazdaspeed, is the same as what the dealers call the sport exhaust for the P5. The part number is 0000-8M-C10.

If it indeed is manufactured by Mazdaspeed, then I would think I could get info from Mazdaspeed. I tried to call them tonight, but unfortunately I just missed them - they had already closed (4 pm PT). I will try again to call them tommorrow - see if I can get some gain numbers from them.

Mom - Are you happy with your Mazdaspeed exhaust? If not I will buy it from you, let me know. (Reply either here or email me at bkail@pclink.com)

Thanks!

The so called sport exhaust is just a pretty shiny muffler. There are no gains! Well , maybe 1 hp. I really like the exhaust, but it is a little buzzy around 3500 rpm so it is annoying on the freeway. I have a long commute everyday so I was already thinking of switching back to the stock muffler.

After a lot of research that got me nowhere, I called Mazda Customer Service. I put the gun to their head, and asked for hp/torque gains from the P5 "Sport Exhaust" accessory. My c.s. guy said he had to check with product development. They came back with 3 to 4 hp increase, although its not clear if this is at the wheel number of at the crank hp. I asked my c.s. guy if he thought this was legit, or they were just blowing smoke to get rid of my question, and he said no, he said it had been tested and he felt this was an honest response. Unfortunatley no dyno test is available to view. So, anyway, even though I'm still skeptical, I went ahead an placed in order in for the Mazda (read "Mazdaspeed") sport exhaust. The possibility of 3 to 4 hp for $200 was too great a temptation. The racing beat system only claims 4 hp, and its over wice as much bread! If nothing else, if it gives me no gain, and I don't like the sound, I'm thinking I could re-sell on ebay, or maybe one of my forum buddies will bail me out, so with some luck maybe I'd be only out $100 or so for makig a bad decision.

I'll post when I get the pipe installed, and dynoed.

PS - If nothing else it looks good!
