I have no idea what it is.. gf just came home and said she can feel the car jerking in gear.. doesnt in nuetral. Great.. is it all that super expensive oil i put in her?(the miata..)

Possibly the fuel pump, I know about 70% of 2004 miata owners have had the fuel pump replaced under warranty for that issue. May be worth taking to the dealer.

k.. drove it around a bit.

it feels all jerky through 1st, 2nd and 3rd at low rpms.. 4th almost nothing.. 5th its very subtle. not like, neck snapping jerks.. but its there.

I was having similar problems, and my car was also backfiring like a champ, felt like was riding through the hood and getting shot at it was backfiring so bad, then in certain gears it would jerk, shake as if it was getting enough gas. Took it to the dealer they ran diagnostic, nothing. they replaced the fuel pump and tada, problem fixed, well not completely. The jerking was gone but I still back fire every now again. Then I took it back a month or so later for just the back firing, again, diagnostic ran, no diagnosis. They replaced the fuel pump again, no help. It doesn't back fire a lot now, but it still does. The dealerships answer to my problem "well we can't duplicate the problem and the diagnostics are showing nothing, so there is no problem". I searched forums far and wide, come to find out, backfiring was major issue with a lot of 2004 msm's. Mazda has done nothing, cause they can't figure it out. I am almost to the point now that I can make it back fire on purpose, kinda fun now though. I just live with the backfiring. But the jerking was fixed with a fuel pump replacement, that was done under warranty. May or may not help you, but all the same, if they replace it for free, why not get it done?
