Can't receive Gmail emails in Infotainment

Is it just me or Gmail emails in an Android phone can't be synced w/ the Infotainment system?
I receive TXT and AOL emails but not Gmail emails.
It looks like the Infotainment email app syncs only "regular" Android mail apps, like AOL, but not Gmail which uses a separate email account set-up.
Has anyone been able to sync Gmail emails with his Android phone and what did you do to make it work?

I have a Galaxy S7 (if the type of phone matters). On the home page, there is the email app. In the settings, I have it set to only my gmail account. When I get an email, it comes up on the screen in the CX5, I can download it, and it will read it to me. With my old phone, I only got AOL emails, but it would only show the title of the email.

Thanks Edinaman... Your method worked for me. I just added my Gmail account to the generic email app on my phone (galaxy 6S) and now my Gmail shows in the infotainment. I did have shut down/restart my phone to get to appear.

I seriously had no idea it received emails too. I'll have to try this. Kinda cool (as long as I don't get tons of mail I guess....) Thanks for the heads-up!

I have a brand new 2016.5 CX-5 GT and email isn't an option. What version of software is running on your CHU? Mine is 55.00.753.
