Ive been struggling lately to get 30mpg on hwy trips at 70mph steady state. I was able to do it early on, but lately I'm in the high 20s. Car has 17,000mi and it's impeccably maintained.

My 2.0L GT AWD (with tech-pack) can do 30mpg at 70mph. Not too hard to manage. I assume your tire pressure is at or near 36psi.

38k miles and I was doing 28-29 mpg into a headwind this week at 20 degrees.

Warm day, no wind and I'm knocking on 33-34 without trying.

I'm sure a 2WD can do that because my AWD is easy to keep above 30mpg at 70 mph.

Could my k&n filter be hurting my mileage ? Running Mobil 1 0w-20 and the car should be broken in.

Winter weather also eats MPG, longer warm up times and a bunch of other factors. Winter gas doesn't help MPG either. I still get more than 30 mpg on the highway doing 70. But mixed city/highway right now I am getting 26-28. We have had very few days above freezing the past month. During the summer I am easily above 30 mixed city/highway.

Easy when I had my 2.0, even my 2.5 manages that every tank in winter conditions. I've seen mileage go down with those intake systems before, you should use a Mazda air filter and the Mazda oil with moly.

If I can believe my instant MPG reading, then my 2.5L AWD can get > 30 MPG on flat highway doing 70.
Yes, even our mild winter temperatures (30s during morning engine start, 40-50s during commute) have an effect and it seems I need more miles to get to optimum performance. It also seems that using the heater has an effect on fuel economy. I now keep the heater off at least until the blue light disappears (yeah, if it's not called enough, I don't use it at all).

Not having ethanol in gas will also help increase mileage.
My Elantra 2007 got 10% better gas mileage (36 mpg) when used with non-ethanol gas when I was driving from Oregon to Kansas. I got 36 MPG from three fill-ups. When I used 10% ethanol gas, I got 33 MPG. All high-way miles.

I have AWD, but as soon as the temp drops below 45F my MPG plummets by about 4 mpg, even when driving steady-state on the highway. I keep my tire pressure around 38psi. In the summer my gauge reads 33+(actual 31ish) and in the winter I'm lucky if it's over 27 or 28(gauge and actualy). When it dropped into the negatives(in F) I had a few weeks of 25mpg averages. That's probably more for warmup time and the fact that I'm still running all-season tires instead of tires with winter compounds.

By next winter I will have a grille shutter system for this puppy. Every bit counts!

I've done a couple of tanks at about 30 mpg (calculated) averaging 70-80mph on freeway. Mine is 2013 AWD 2.0L.

I am thinking about doing the same thing. I have 100% of the lower and about 2/3rds of the upper grill blocked with black Coroplast right now. Even when it gets up to 50 ambient, the engine temps stay below 190. When its 20 or less, it stays between 170 and 180. Shorter warm up times, and better fuel economy. It would be cool to use a radiator mounted thermocouple, microcontroller and servo to actuate a shutter system.

I am also thinking a "warm air" intake might help too. That is, alter the airbox intake to pick up behind the radiator. I have been using Dashcommand to monitor the MAP and Variable intake timing. When the intake temp stays below about 5-10 degrees, I have seen that it never goes Atkinson cycle. It stays in Otto cycle operation with significant throttling. I assume that is because the intake charge is so cold that the combustion would become unstable in Atkinson.

According to the dash display on my stock 2013 w Auto:

At 65 mph I get around 37 mpg
At 75 mph I get around 29 mpg

That's on basically flat highway, two attempts at each within a few days.

Who sells an aftermarket grille system?
