Can Mt or road bike fit in the back standing. with front wheel removed?

Just install a hitch and a quality rack. I have a Curt class III hitch and a Kuat NV rack. Between my girlfriend and myself (we both race competitively) I will have a lot of $$$$ on there at any given time. Just buy a sports equipment rider on your homeowner's insurance and you're covered in case of theft or damage. The only time I worry about keeping the bikes inside the vehicle is during the winter in which case I'm glad she has a Honda Element, we can fit three bikes in the back with the wheels on!

Just for the record, I didn't suggest driving the car with a bike loaded like this (unsafe IMO), and I agree that folding both of the seats down and laying the bike flat is a better option when it is possible. Obviously you can install a hitch and a hitch-mounted rack, or you could get a roof rack. Exterior racks don't work for everyone.

The original poster asked if a road or mountain bike will fit inside standing up...I was just trying to answer the question.

Hey all,

I recently got my CX-5 last week and didn't have time to get my hitch installed before my girlfriend and i headed to NYC for the 5 Boro bike ride.

Super happy to learn/report that both bikes fit in the back; standing up with the front wheel off and the seats lowered.
I had to modify my rack a bit so that it didn't sit as high on the board I had it connected to but after I changed that up a little, I had no issues.
I was amazed to see the both the bike racks cleared the back window. This setup gave plenty of room for other things to put back there.

These bikes are the largest of the bikes I own (city-bikes) and I have no doubt that our road bikes and full-suspensions will fit no problem.
Though I use the hitch rack most times, I do like to put them inside for security reasons when we travel overnight for rides.

I was going to upload some pictures, but couldn't figure out how to do this. I don't really want to take the time to read/research how to do this right now.
