Cabin air filter

Anyone change out the cabin air filter themselves and have any insights? I can't seem to locate it. Mazda recommends changing every 25k miles or 2 years. Thanks!

OK, so sometimes I ask before I search carefully--found my own answer in a different area of the forums. The location of the cabin filter and changing it are incredibly simple. The location is immediately behind the glove box, you open the glove box, remove the panel that comprises the rear "wall" of the box, and this exposes the filter housing beyond. There is a white, rectangular door to access the filter, just squeeze the latch on the left and pull the door, slide out the filter and viola! Mine was filthy after 2 years, 23k miles. I just vacuumed it out but will order up a new one on-line, around $15.

FWIW I am unable to simply squeeze the latch to get the door to swing--I always have to use a screwdriver to pry it open.

does anyone know where the cabin air filter is located on a 2008 cx9
As Crabtree said (in case you did not read that post), it is located BEHIND the grove compartment.

I recommend changing it at 15K miles. Mine was dirty at 15K.

- unhook the lower link arms (both sides)
- squeeze the upper stoppers inward
(be careful, the compartment will drop - make sure you hold on to it)
- You shall see a while plastic box, which has a latched door. Open it.
- You shall see the filter. Pull it out, replace it with a new one
- reverse the procedures to put all back together.

Nice job ceric. Thanks.

Tom

I wrote that out of my memory.
How is the 2007 different?

P.S. there is only 1 lower link arm on the right side. I corrected it later.

I remove a smaller panel that's part of the back wall of the glove box. I don't have to take the glove box apart.

Believe or not, I was recalling the procedures of replacing the cabin air filter of my wife's Prius. The filter is also located behind the glove compartment. (silly)
(Someone asked me a question about the lower link arm of the glove compartment on edmunds.com. My mind was misdirected somehow when I wrote that...)

SportOwner is right. There is door at the back wall of the glove compartment.
It is much simpler to replace in a CX9. Better design than Toyota's in the regard.

FYI, the motorcraft FP-65 filter is the same as the Mazda OEM. I stumbled upon this as I was ordering new wipers for the CX-9 on Amazon. My total was around $20 for the wipers and I needed to be over $25 for the free shipping. Anyway, Amazon only lists some Taiwanese filter as fitting the CX-9 but after a little research I discovered the Motorcraft FP-65 would work.

Here is the link. NOTE THAT THE PICTURE ON AMAZON IS NOT CORRECT. The filter is exactly like the OEM and was made in Japan. It is the same as the Ford Edge but this appears to be one part that Ford borrowed from Mazda and not vice versa.

https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned)

It is currently $14.65.

Also, I agree that the change interval should be around 15K miles. I changed it at 25K and it was FILTHY.

Thanks for the great find! I will try it next time I have to change it which is another 13K miles. I just changed it at 60K, I too change them every 15K miles 25K just seems to long. Plus I work for an auto group which includes Ford and my cost for that filter is $12.31...SWEET!

I normally do my due diligence, but when I went in for my latest oil change, they offered to change the cabin filter for $50. I took the offer and now that I found this thread, I wanted to verify that they didnt pull a Jiffy Lube, but I cannot get my big hands to open the tab of the white cartridge.

Do they make a HEPA version of this filter? I would love the extra filtration. Recirc is nice, but its not the permanent option I would like.
